Below is a screenshot of IP Search Tool. This is the installation tool for Longse camera's and made by Herospeed (herospeed.net). Windows didn't like me installing this piece of software and warned me for it. As usual, i neglected that warning and went ahead whit it (on a demo machine of course).

It's not (yet) what i described above, there are a few flaws and its not perfect. On the other hand, it's the first one i saw that shows Longse (of course), Arecont Vision, Sony, Axis and an 'unknown' (it's a Vivotek in this case) brand camera in the same discovery process. Maybe there are other tools out there that do this but this is the first one i've actually seen doing it.

It does show the Longse camera 'IPC' although it's on a different subnet. Not unique but nice anyway. I tried the same with the Sony and moved that to a different subnet. As could be expected, it didn't find it anymore. :-(

Although it's not perfect, it can be usefull to find camera's in an unknown network for instance. Sure, a network scanner like Advanced IP Scanner can do that to but that will give you all networked devices, not only the camera's. if you have a lot of networked devices this tool might be a faster approach. Also, it will find Longse camera's in different subnets which a network scanner won't.

Bottom line: will still have to wait for one that can detect all camera's on all subnets and displays all information correct. I guess i'll have to keep dreaming of that one just a litle bit longer but then again, it's nice to have dreams :-)

Most cameras advertise themselves on the network using either Universal Plug-an-play UPnP, ONVIF device discovery (which is basically web service discovery), and I think maybe the Bonjour protocol. Others also implement a proprietary approach which usually involves listening on a UDP port for a packet of a specific length and format. But if a discovery tool implements the first two then they'll capture most cameras on the network. The point is, it is not like they had to write special code for each manufacturer of camera. I would imagine all NVRs would have something like this built in. It is certainly easy to implement.

Agreed. About every VMS i've tried will find all/most of the IP cameras on a network so i indeed don't think it's hard to do. Quastions sstays, why doesn't anyone provide such a discovery tool. It would certainly speed up things in troubleshooting unknown installations

Apart from the standard ONVIF discovery, upnp protocols..., I have always assumed the cameras also support undocumented protocols that their proprietary discovery tools use for discovering the cameras on different subnets. I am not sure if the camera manufactures publish those protocols. One could take a look using wireshark I suppose and reverse engineer them.

We've created LANScanner for this kind of discovery. It will use HTTP & ONVIF to retrieve camera images. You can add up to 8 logins and can export to PDF and Excel. It will also tell you which switch and port a device plugs into as long as SNMP is enabled on the switch and they're in the same scan range.

Hi, Is anyone aware of a way to perform a default reset on the new AP65XX devices if you loan the AP to someone and they reset the password (and then forget it). Also a potential issue if they disable the secondary IP, meaning you cannot connect via a ZeroConfig IP determined from the MAC address. On the older APs you could connect a Comm port cable and perform a passwd default/reset system to reset to factory default. But since there's no console port on these devices, there's no way of doing the same. There are 2 jumper pairs exposed on the back of the unit, are these intended for some soft of reset tool that bridges the pins? Regards Gazza

I talked to tech support just a few days ago and they shared this little bit of information:
The AP discovery tool is available by downloading WING 5.2.1. With that tool you will be able to find IP address of AP but you still need to know the credentials.

There is no command or general reset password for resetting the password on AP650/AP6532. The customer needs to provide the MAC address of the AP and the tech support will generate a reset password for them. After the reset password is generated, the customer has to:

I have a customer, located in another state, that has two AP6532s which are not responding to their zero configuration address and not requesting an IP address on VLAN1. They are also not visible from the discovery and reset tool. They have got lost somewhere in the mddle of moving them to tagged management VLAN 2 using their management VC. A reset cable seems to be the only thing we can use to get them working. How can we get hold of the pin outs for this cable? Thanks, Damian

I'd be interested in knowing the pin outs too. AP65XX's are a pain if they've had any VLAN/subnet/password changes... We have an AP650 that won't adopt/appear on a controller, we can't connect to the zero-config IP and doesn't it request an IP. Essentially it powers up but that's it! Andy.

Hi Jared, Thanks for the response. However in my testing with AP6532s, as soon as you set an AP into StandAlone or Virtual Controller mode, it no longer permits adoption to an RFS#### when connected. You have to know the IP/Username/Password to log into the AP and perform a default reset before it will adopt to the controller. Is it possible I could get the AP Reset Windows utility that you mentioned?

Yes - configuring the AP for autonomous or Virtual Controller operation disables MLCP so that the AP will not adopt to a controller.  In this case you would need the AP reset utility.  Please contact Chris Hinsz (PM) to request this tool.

You are correct that the 4 pin connector recessed on the AP650/6532 is for a custom console adapter.  This is not generally available, so the easiest way to reset an AP to factory default config is to adopt it to a WiNG 5 controller via L2 adoption. You can either apply the default config profile and remove the device level overrides from the controller web UI, or connect to the AP's CLI via SSH / console to the controller.  From priv exec CLI, type "connect ".  This will connect you to the AP CLI, and from the priv exec prompt on the AP CLI you can enter "erase startup-config" > "commit" to reset it to factory default.  Reboot the AP but do not save it's config to startup.  When it reboots it will be in factory default config. If you have no controller available to use, there is an AP reset Windows utility available through limited distribution which will discover an L2-attached AP to your PC and reset it's configuration to factory default.

I really would like to say thank you for teaching me so many tactics on how to build my brand. It has helped me a lot more than I thought. It truly taught me more about building myself than any other survey or class has ever taught me.
