Barbara Jordan/ Bayard Rustin Coalition Celebrates GLBT History Month
Monthly Newsletter
Greetings from the Desk of the Board Chair
ron buckmire

As the weather starts to cool down and we head into fall we would like to introduce you to some new changes within our Coalition.

First of all we would like to introduce our new field organizer Andre J. Molette.  With Rodney, he brings a wealth of experience in working with grassroots organizations and the African-American LGBT community. We are very excited to have him join us. We have also added Kiana M. Green a Doctoral student in American Studies and Ethnicity to our Board of Directors. We are so excited to continue to grow our coalition and build stronger partnerships in the the Black LGBT community!

We would like to remind you that the California General Election is November 2nd 2010. The Barbara Jordan/ Bayard Rustin Coalition can not endorse political candidates, however we would like to remind you that when you vote make sure your are voting for someone that is fair and equal minded and stands for your issues. This is a crucial election year and it is very important that we make our voices heard as a community.

It is an especially historic time for LGBT civil rights as we are making monumental progress both in the courts, in the legislatures, and in society as a whole, however it is not enough.  As evidenced by the devastating surge in teenage suicides nationwide, LGBT students particularly, are still experiencing bullying, hate speech, hate violence, and are the unfortunate victims of hate crimes.  We must continue to remain vocal, vigilant, and mobilize to advocate for our rights and our interests.

In addition to a host of political and community events around town we would like to specially invite you to are our October Community Action meeting on THURSDAY October 29th at the Lucy Florence Cultural Center located on 43rd Street and Degnan Blvd. at 7:00 pm. We hope to see you all there. Best wishes!

Sincerely,

Ron Buckmire

The Barbara Jordan/Bayard Rustin Coalition (JRC) teamed up with One Nation Working Together to rally for social change at Los Angeles Community College on Saturday October 2nd at 9:00 am. The event took place at 855 S. Vermont at the south side of the campus. The Los Angeles event was  held in conjunction with the national event in Washington D.C. at 12:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.

This was the first time that organizations like the AFL-CIO, NAACP, Teamsters, Rainbow/Push Coalition, Courage Campaign, Equality California, JRC, individuals and other partners worked together on five main issues:

·    Putting America Back to Work
·    Quality & Affordable Public Education
·    Equality for All
·    A Clean Environment
·    Immigration Reform
·    Peace & Justice

The day started at 9:00AM with a massive public display & mobilization. People from the community talked about the five main issues and how One Nation related to them. From 11:00 am to Noon, they had "Tools and Tactics" Coaching where folks signed up with organizations working on the issues.

Rodney Nickens Jr., Community Organizer for the Barbara Jordan Bayard Rustin Coalition said, "One Nation represents a new movement-a new civil rights movement for social change and social justice. JRC is really exited to be a part a movement that is so closely aligned to our mission."

The Jordan/Rustin Coalition partnered with the National Action Network-LA for an important discussion on the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and its impact on Black communities in Los Angeles.  It was a very lively and engaging discussion and much progress was made by an exciting and knowledgeable panel which consisted of Dr. Maulana Karenga, Carrie Broadus, Dr. John Williams, Cleo Monago and moderated by Carson City Councilman Michael GiPson.
JRC Is Outraged Over the Alleged Accusations Against Nationally Renowned and Virulently Homophobic Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church
eddie long

The Barbara Jordan/Bayard Rustin Coalition is outraged to learn of the controversy surrounding the nationally renowned and virulently homophobic pastor of megachurch, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church near Atlanta, GA.

"Although the Barbara Jordan/Bayard Rustin Coalition is a Los Angeles-based advocacy organization we could not be silent on this significant national issues.  It has direct ramifications on the Black religious and faith-based community here who has not exactly welcomed the Black LGBT community with open arms.  We must continue to call out homophobic preachers who seek to demonize, terrorize, and exploit our community for their own personal gains," said Rodney Nickens Jr., JRC Community Organizer.

As many around the nation are well aware of, Long's image is now under full assault after four young men have  have filed civil lawsuits accusing him of abusing his spiritual authority to coerce them into sexual relationships, allegations he has denied in a statement issued by his attorney. During a Sunday morning service broadcast around the world, New Birth appeared to throw its support behind Long as members leapt to their feet to cheer Long as he vowed to fight the allegations, took to the stage with his wife, Vanessa, and compared himself to David fighting Goliath.

"I've got five rocks, and I haven't thrown one yet," Long said. Long during his church appearance on Sunday September 26, 2010 did not address the specific allegations contained in the four lawsuits filed against him. Long, in a statement read on a syndicated radio show Thursday, denied the allegations."Let me be clear: The charges against me and New Birth are false," the statement said. "I have devoted my life to helping others and these false allegations hurt me deeply, but my faith is strong and the truth will emerge."

The Jordan/Rustin Coalition will continue to follow this case and urge our community to do the same as we remain watchful and continue to protest any minister or religious and faith-based leader who seeks to gain prominence by demonizing the Black LGBT Community.  We call upon all Black ministers and people of good faith to denounce this hypocrisy and preach a message of acceptance, compassion, love, and understanding.

"And as with so many movements, it was also something more: It was at this defining moment that these folks who had been marginalized rose up to challenge not just how the world saw them, but also how they saw themselves. As we've seen so many times in history, once that spirit takes hold there is little that can stand in its way. And the riots at Stonewall gave way to protests, and protests gave way to a movement, and the movement gave way to a transformation that continues to this day. It continues when a partner fights for her right to sit at the hospital bedside of a woman she loves. It continues when a teenager is called a name for being different and says, "So what if I am?" It continues in your work and in your activism, in your fight to freely live your lives to the fullest."
