Darn! I was thinking of advertising a new site using the JWN. Yes, it takes some time to do these PDF's every week and I am sad to see it go.

We all appreciate the hard work!

Brian, thanks for each issue, for each article, for each word. I´ve learnt a
lot from JWN (and not only about Joomla!).

I agree. I thought the newsletter was excellent. It's a shame it will no
longer be published, and I understand the time and effort that went into
each issue. Good luck, Brian!

Hi all,

I am in total agreement with Rose Bowen's ideas! Of course it should be produced on the Joomla! framework and RSS feeds. I think we should begin discussing this and come up with a plan. We should also ask if anyone else from the community would be interested by a posting on Joomla.org once there is a plan set.

Let's move forward!

We're all sorry for this Brian,

I have been reading theme all, and been looking forward to next
release every week.
If you, or someone else, in the future get the possibility and
inspiration to continue it would be many happy readers I think.

Thanks so far, and sorry for what ever happened to stop it.

Hi All

I am considering the possibility of trying to fill the missing gap that
is Joomla Weekly News.
I could probably get started in 2 weeks when my current client projects
are finished.
I have some experience writing about Joomla as I wrote the Learn Joomla
book (and am writing others)
I think it is difficult for one person to write everything in JWN, Brian
did a fantastic job, but it must have been a huge strain writing and
publishing JWN on his own.   I would prefer to act as editor and write
about 50% if I could get other writers to contribute, in particular the
extensions reviews etc.  Any Joomla bloggers/experts out there
interested to volunteer as writers?

*Brian* - how would you feel about someone else picking up the baton?
If OK, would you be able to provide some insight into your
research/writing process?  Is the existing copy published under Creative
Commons?

If enough people are interested perhaps we could do a 'Phoenix'
operation on JWN?

Cheers

Mike Lloyd

I'm game.  I've built about 40 sites in the last two years with Joomla, and have worked with a lot of the components and extensions, learned some tweaks, etc.

Could I suggest, perhaps, that the "weekly" be put into more of an online format?  With this being an email list, having to locate and open a PDF file was just enough extra to make me put off reading the weekly (and this is not a criticism of Brian, who was doing an outstanding job and putting in boatloads of time on it... this is just my input as a user of the list and how things work well with me as a busy reader. I've always been frustrated with Acrobat Reader because it doesn't seem to want to completely shut down when I close it, leaving enough resources tangled up to bog things down.)

AFAI, brian selected the PDF format to avoid that. His intention was not to
have another website devoted to Joomla! but a Joomla! Magazine. He tried to
find a "neutral" solution. A website would not be so neutral and there are a
lot of sites with Joomla! related news outside there, in the Joomlasphere.

Just my two cents.

I didn't mean creating a website, I meant something that was embedded in email rather than something that had to be opened separately or downloaded elsewhere.  I would honestly love to get frequent email notices about new components and extensions and developments with Joomla all through the week as opposed to one weekly grouping to digest.

My guess is that some people prefer PDF, some email, some RSS, and some
like to read a website.  My personal preference, for what it's worth, is
a short email 'highlights' newsletter with full info on a website (with
a searchable archive), plus an RSS feed for daily updates.  But I
recognise everyone is different.  I know Brian was keen that the  JWN
could be read easily on a screen as  an ebook style  newspaper, and that
format made it easy to quickly browse through the weeks news, although
for me it was then difficult to go back and find an earlier article.

Is there some way that we could publish on all three platforms in an
automated way using Joomla, a bit like Docbook allows tagged texts to be
published for different formats?  Would the new PDF capabilities in
Joomla 1.5 allow us to do something clever in automatically generating a
formatted PDF edition weekly (which could be emailed)?

Incidentally I have access to a lot of bandwidth so emailing out PDFs
would not be a problem.

Now, that's the power of an open source community! Brian got the ball
rolling and Mike and Rose and others can take it and improve it and continue
things going! Way to go all of you!

Just my 2-cents: The Joomla Weekly News is one of the best
publications for a quick summary of keeping up with the Joolma using
industry/community. There are over 10 new user groups being developed
that can use this publication as a guide for topics.

I'm certain with a little campaigning this publication will be a hit.
I really like the PDF bacause it prints well.

I am in total agreement with Rose Bowen's ideas! Of course it should be produced on the Joomla! framework and RSS feeds. I think we should begin discussing this and come up with a plan. We should also ask if anyone else from the community would be interested by a posting on Joomla.org once there is a plan set.
I have identified a solution, which with, a little tweaking, will enable the news magazine to be published on a website, email newsletter, RSS , and automatically in PDF form, using Joomla extensions (what else!).   A little tweaking of the PDF component will be required and I am going to fund a developer to do this work (already lined up).  This should be done by mid June and will hopefully mean the news can be delivered in a form to suit everyone!  I have a server lined up to do the hosting of the Joomla site, PDFs and email.

More information in the next few days as soon as things are sorted out.  A fresh posting on the Joomla.org forum is a good idea as soon as there is a clear plan for people to help with.

Regards

Mike

PS If you are avid readers of JWN you will know which extension I am proposing to use to do the PDF newsletter automatically :)
