I’m building a new Joomla! 3.4.1  site and am having trouble with the global configuration SEO settings.

Search Engine Friendly URLs on places /index.php/ in front of the page name.
Search Engine Friendly URLs AND Use URL Rewriting on yields the following error message when browsing to a page.

404 - File or directory not found.

The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

These are the settings I’ve been using for what seems like forever.

Using JoomlaShack Elan template, which I used last week on another site which is not having this problem.

I’ve cleared the cache, checked the site on 4 different browsers, created a new menu module. I’ve had this problem in the past but can’t remember what I did to resolve the issue.

Any idea what might be going on?

Have you edited the .htaccess file yet? If so, are you sure the settings are correct for your server configuration? Are you using a NGINX or IIS server instead of LAMP, in which case the procedure is a bit different?

Thanks Sully.

The newest version of Joomla does not include a request to rename the htaccess .txt file. Changing the name to .htaccess as was required in the past made no differece.

Adjusting # RewriteBase / made no difference.

PHP 5.3.29 on IIS

Any other ideas anyone?

Since you're using IIS, .htaccess won't help, at least, as far I know. You might want to take a look at https://docs.joomla.org/Enabling_Search_Engine_Friendly_%28SEF%29_URLs#IIS_7, which indicates that web.config is needed, which is shipped as web.config.txt.

Best,
