Hello out there,

So I upgraded one of my sites to Joomla 3.6.4 and the front end is fine but the back end is broken. I get an ugly blue screen with this error: error decoding JSON data: Syntax error Trying to sort out the solutions from the various forums is just too frustrating. Does anyone know of a service that repairs joomla sites? Do you repair them?

Thanks,

Mark

You might try myjoomla.com -- good for restoring sites that have
been hacked, maybe good for ones that are just broken!

Sorry to hear this.

Marc,
It is a conflict with one of the plugins and the database. There are several Joomla articles on this. I have this issue with accessing a module created prior to the upgrade. I'm not very much of a help on this, but if you google it, you will see some solutions.

Also thank you Catherine. I have seen that general response after googling for a solution. There seem to be some good suggestions but they're a bit geeky for me. I'll keep looking .

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark,
Did you already clear your browser cache?  I would try that first, just to make sure some old file isn't causing this error. Vicky

So Friends, here's the deal. The cure for this problem is found here: https://www.joomlashack.com/blog/tutorials/error-decoding-json-data-syntax/  The tricky part is that I wasn't sure where you put this code to execute it but you need to pull up PHPMyAdmin, click on your database, click on the SQL tab and run the code there as an SQL query. Be sure to read carefully as I missed an important instruction which is to replace abc_ in the query with the database prefix in your database.

What a geeky mess to have to figure out for a Joomla! upgrade. As it happens I'm doing my next project in WP and I'll keep you posted.

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I am doing a project in WP now, my second actually, and even though I’m liking it, I miss some of the stuff Joomla does so well right out of the box – like organizing images in folders (you have to get a plugin for that and they are still not as good as bare bones Joomla(. And adding module positions – easy in Joomla – tedious in WP.

Even though I appreciate WP and enjoy learning more about it – Joomla still ranks higher in my estimation.

Thanks for this fix. I went through the white-knuckle upgrade process for most my Joomla sites last week! Still have 2 to go.

Best,

Joanne
