Hello,

Just having a play with this and vagrant is working fine. However, after issuing the command to setup a site I am now presented with:

Error 503 Backend fetch failed

Backend fetch failed

Varnish cache server

When trying to access the said site. Suggestions? clearly something to do with Varnish, but I've never used Varnish before and this is an off the shelf box.

Hello Tony,

This error comes from Varnish and it indicates a problem connecting with the site. What you can try:

1. Refresh your browser a few times

2. Restart the server using "box server:restart"

3. If the problem continue to exist, use http://joomla.box:8080 This bypasses Varnish

Does that help?

Hi Tony,

It's very strange that you would get such an error on a clean install. Can you still browse to http://joomla.box/dashboard? Does everything else still work? Is it just the new site?

You can check if the site is throwing any errors by taking a look at the logs. You can check them via the browser here or take a look via the terminal at /var/log/apache2/

If the error logs aren't helpful, I suggest to try and bypass Varnish by using port 8080: http://joomla.box:8080/sitename. Then you connect directly to Apache and you should get some more information.

Cheers,
Steven

Indeed very strange to receive such an error when following the instructions.
Happened to me as well, appeared to be nothing to do with varnish.
It is a typical message when varnish wants to pass on the request to apache.
Turned out it required an PHP version to be set. Everything not php related just works!
Anything PHP related gives this error!

You might need to restart the vm.

Steven,

I'm getting the same 503 after a clean install. My logs give the following error for every attempt at page load:
[Wed Oct 05 21:52:47.602981 2016] [core:notice] [pid 5092] AH00052: child pid 5181 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

It looks like someone opened a Github issue for this, but it was closed as "invalid".

Cheers,
James

James,

Please try out the suggestions below and let us know what you get as a result.

The most likely culprit is the z-ray plugin. You can disable it using the box zray:disable command to see if things improve.

Cheers,
Steven

I've just had this problem on a clean install. Bypassing Varnish didn't work; disabling Z-Ray did.

I'm a newbie and just in case it helps anyone like me I had a similar 503 error when trying to install the free template JD Atlanta Bundle Package

box zray:disable

..alone did not fix it

but when I also accessed through

http://joomla.box:8080

..it then installed without the error

Hello Wayne,

Welcome here!

The error is triggered by Varnish, not z-ray. The error happens when there is a slow loading process in Joomla that exceeds the time limit of Varnish in which case Varnish will report it as a backend not available. We will be resolving this by moving Varnish to a different port so if you like to test Varnish with Joomla you can do that on a different port and not the default :80.

Thanks for the report!

Many thanks for confirming this Johan!

Now that Akeeba, Kunena and my JD template are all installed OK, I am back to accessing with Varnish re-enabled via the standard URL - http://joomla.box/dashboard/

However, on my Win 7 i7 laptop I'm finding page-load speeds are still very slow.. enabling Gzip and the Joomla Cache helped a lot but still far from painless.

So far I haven't changed much, the site is pretty empty. Please can anyone tell me if these are around the average page-load speeds using their Joomla in a Box installs?

Page 1st load Reload Debug mode off
 Admin Control Panel 10 4 4
Frontend Home 21 20 20
Kunena Recent topics 31 23 20

(seconds rounded down)

20 seconds for the freshly installed, dummy forum page to load seems like a lot and 20 seconds for a pretty blank Home page?!

I thought it should be quite fast, developing on a local machine.

Have any others experienced this problem? Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

Thanks a bunch!

Hello Wayne,

Sorry for the late reply. I'm a custom on forums like this to open up a new thread if you want to discuss a different issue, would you mind doing that? Happy to further help you from there.

Kind regards,

Johan

Sorry for the late reply guys. I've been bust with development using MAMP.

Had a problem with MAMP on upgrade, shock horror. So decided to re-visit Vagrant. And all working very well now I have disable ZRay.

Thanks again.
