How can I get a desktop version running with the configurations of the joomlatools vagrant box?

Hello Andrew,

Not sure I understand your question. Our Joomlatools Vagrant box already runs on Virtualbox, by default the GUI is not enabled as we don't need that, you can however enable it, not sure though why you want this, or what you are trying to achieve ?

I dont know I guess. I thought I could set up an ubuntu unity instance as my environment. For whatever reason I can symlink just fine in a virtual desktop, I guess because I am not sharing folders with the host (Windows 10). I read that I should vagrant up as an administrator to solve the symlink issue but then found out that I can't vagrant up as admin because of the box owner and ID. I tried vagrant init as admin and now running into more permission issues so I thought I could just flat out use it in a desktop environment. Overall Windows seems to just be in my way but for whatever reason I don't want to wipe it off. The only benefit I see using Windows with this vagrant box is to use an IDE or editor installed on the host. I was thinking it would just be swell if I could make a box that had a configured IDE or editor that worked with Joomla and php including templates and auto-complete etc and I could take it to any machine. I don't even know if I make sense...

Hello Andrew,

Think you might be overcomplicating things a bit. Our Vagrant box is designed to run as a webserver and be connected to the host for file sharing of specific folders. It's not build to run as a fully standalone Ubuntu box, not an expert myself, you probably can, but though that will work without making substancial changes.

Happy coding,

Johan
