Another question from Mitch about Joomla 1.5.18

A special thank you to all who have responded with suggestions.

I have done a clean install of 1.5.18.

I tried Wayne's test server and the upload worked.

Using Jesper's tip, I checked the directory permissions from within
Joomla. They show that only the components directory is writeable. I
had already checked other directories logging in as root through my
terminal and had reset them all (in a very insecure fashion) to rwx
(777). They show up on the server as rwx but not from within Joomla.

What could be causing this discrepancy and how do I address it?
