Hi All,
How's everybody doing?
I've been getting a real kick out of teaching the kids at the coderdojo at NUIG and as expected it has allowed me meet some great people. And last week what I'd been hoping for materialised. We have a new mentor by the name of Guido. He's a javascript head so we've been kicking some ideas around but he's also an Open(linked)Data specialist !!! and her had some very interesting things to say about Joomla! (that went some way to confirming my hopes for joomla in the coming years). In fact he has a colleague who is using jooma to developer her open data stuff. I'm not exactly sure where this will lead, but Guido has said he will introduce us to each other so that we can see what can be done.
Meanwhile, Bernie and myself have been discussing a e-publication system that the students are in need of to efficiently manage content from source to final delivery on every platform from kindle to iphone and how joomla might work as the transport medium and tagger.
So what say ye?
Anybody want to help? I think Chris Davenports import libraries are a great place to start. When Chris originally showed me them I was still stuck in Joomla 1.5 and had not upgraded my skills, but now I'm ready to assist any coders who want to take on this task.
And based on the success so far (and never knowing where ones next lead might come) I begin teaching joomla at an all-girls schools starting the 23rd and every Monday evening after that. For this particular course we will be investigating building a time bank - A joomla component that manages time credits (like the let systems) greta for recession times like these. As I've said before I feel awkward teaching code when I'm such a novice coder myself, but I reckon I'm a decent developer and an even better educator so I might as well keep going in this direction.
Is it time we start spreading the word on the forums and whatever to get some help from other coders?
I will be putting my educational game/simulation on github over the next 2-3 days. It's still rough but it's running on J2.5 which was the main thing holding me back. (And a few students in the coderdojo are now actively working on it).
regards
Rob
