(Some of the info is missing from the presentation, and I cannot edit it.)
1.1) Any CMS versus bespoke website.
For educational institutions, charity organisations, NGOs, local governments, sports groups, retail outlets and individuals. It simply makes sense to use a CMS and defer development costs to the organisation behind the CMS.
1.2) Any Open Source CMS versus Proprietary CMS
Open Source encourages learning the system from any entry point that suits the student.
1.3) Joomla over any other open source CMS.
1.3.1) While each CMS has its advantages and disadvantages, Joomla is in a unique position to cater for the most varied of uses cases within an educational environment from a non IT student who wishes to present his thesis or project in an online form, to a student of code who wishes to understand modern techniques such as OOP and MVC.
1.3.2) Platform independence. Joomla is making great strides to support various server OS's and Database Providers.
1.4) Breaking New Ground
1.4.1) The separation of platform and CMS will allow for Joomla-like applications to be run from the command line.
1.4.2) The Unified Content Model will present the IT student with cutting edge methodologies, not present in the paradigms of the other leading open source CMSs.
2) Objectives
2.1) To present to the educational faculty the advatages Joomla has in non IT areas such as Thesis and Project Presentation.
2.2) To create any libraries and extensions that may faciliate students in these areas.
2.3) To create documentation that suits both a typical classroom environment and new methods of learning.
2.4) To link the educational community with the joomla community where potential new partnerships may occur. From Joomla.org to the numerous User Groups across the globe, there is a wealth of information for students to tap into. This would result in extensions developed specifically for education.
For example,
OpenSim interfaces (second life clone also run on Mysql and Mssql), and inventroy management components. (Open sim is being used in many educational pilot projects).
Open data import and presentation layers.
Microtagging (rdf,geotagging,opengraph)
2.5) To facilitate the communication between academics and the Joomla development community.
2.6) To create graded modules for courseware to guide students through the multifaceted disiplines within the entire Joomla Cycles of Development from Daily Frontend Usage to Core Contributions.( including video presentations from Joomla and third party developers.)
