Hi All,

Today I begin training 12 adult education tutors in web development with Joomla. I intend to make being part of a larger community the focus of this 5 week(2hrs a week) course. While I don't think 10 weeks is realistic to become a web designer, it is enough to begin the journey in a positive long-term manner . It is the larger joomla community that makes this feasable, and is fundamental to my approach.

I will be encouragiing the tutors  to take part in the Joomla User Group Ireland  forum, where they will communicate with other students and tutors.  This is already in progress with the help of GerryMc and Ian Byrne of Clane VEC.

The tutors will then teach a 10 week (2hrs a week) web development course.

I will have 12 pre-installed websites and will work largely unprepared, documenting everything as we progress. I will post the results here.

Hi Rob

Good luck, hope this works out for you.
I have set up a moodle (Learning Management System) site for Clane and I can set something up for you if it helps. I have used a set of videos which are available online to form the structure of the online course. My aim is to replace these with our own screencast videos when time permits. I have been using Screenr to record screencasts as tutorials for another course I am giving at the moment. I can give you access to that if you wish, or indeed anyone that wants to contribute. I can do a few screencasts as a sample and then it may inspire others to better my attempt!

btw : The school here is Scoil Mhuire Community School Clane. We are not part of the Kildare VEC, although I have some contact with Kildare VEC and a member of the VEC sits on the management board.

Best Regards
Gerry

Thanks Rob and Gerry for these updates! It is exciting to hear of the work you are doing, along with Jon and his contacts in North Carolina and Sukh in South Korea. You all are taking the first important steps in an important initiative that will strengthen the Joomla community and lead to increased future development contributions.

Please keep documenting and sharing what you are doing, and keep listening to your students and sharing what you are learning as part of this process.

Thanks again to all of you for your efforts to keep this important initiative moving forward. I think this could be shaping up to be one of the Joomla project's major success stories for 2012. Please keep these updates coming!

Best regards,

paul
