Is a backlink the "buy me a cup of coffee" inside the admin side of the
extension? If so why is that bad?

If you read more carefully you will see this isn't what I meant. I was trying to point out that those visible backlinks in the Frontend are just against the GPL license.

I find it absolutely normal having a Paypal donation button with a "Buy me a beer" notice. This is exactly what I said, I prefer to ask for a donation or a support subscription fee from people using my extensions, but no backlinks in the Frontend.

There are some very popular extensions out there, even listed in JED, and their devs ask for support fees -on restricted domains number + to keep a backlink back to them with a notice of "Powered by..."

ah, I was asking cause I had just made a plugin with the donation thing
in the backend and was beginning to think I shouldn't have :S
