Hi,

i know we have a couple of portals or other info sites like wiki, irc, mailing-list, forum, ux-forum, idea-pool and so on.
But especially the forum seems to be overwhelmed and (if i can say) "outdated". I really don't want to know how many duplicated entries are on that forum.

So why not using a modern Q&A tool ? There were a few attempts to create a Joomla-StackExchange site, but it never comes to an usable state.

So what do you think ? Could a Q&A tool be the right thing for joomla and his huge community ? And if it is, should we go the "short" way using StackExchange, or are
there other imaginable solutions ?

In my opinion, a Q&A is the best way to support the community and AskUbuntu shows that StackExchange can be awesome.

I've been spending a lot of time on StackOverflow looking at how they use tags (almost 40,000 tags) and it does really seem great and flexibly the way it works. To me it seems like it would be a great kind of thing to have for Joomla.

One thing that really frustrates me about the current forum is the number of really bad answers given by people with lots of posts (perceived expertise). It would be great to have any system that allowed people to rank/validate an answer

I personally find that StackExchange has a nice model of effectively providing help with the ability for peer review of answers.

Elin,

Are you saying in place of the forums? Something for the community to use?

Or rather as a feature for a future Joomla release?

Thanks,

NO NO NO, do it organised! Vote for questions who have under 10 votes.

At this point we need 2 more questions with a score of 10 or more to get to the next stage!

Stackexhange is great, we need such a comunnity for Joomla!

When I have a problem I hate reading tons offorum posts without knowing which answer is good or if there even is an answer to my problem.

@Elin I saw and upvoted you a lot on Stackoverflow, thanks for your contribution there.

+1 for a q&a solution @ joomla.org. why driving traffic away from joomla.org? I think it would make more sense to replace the joomla forum with a decent q&a extension if the forum doesn't fit the requirements nowadays....just a thought.

I would love to see all joomla stuff (code.joomla.org, ask.joomla.org, docs.joomla.org, etc.) in one place to get one portal. Even a Joomla-ID or other crossover authentifications would be great. But we have to be realistic. It takes years to get all the things happend, so we not using the probably best Q&A solution in the meanwhile. Drupal, Wordpress, Ubuntu, and a lot of other applications show taht StackExchange works.

As far as I understand we need not only 200 commiters, but also "100 committers with 200+ rep on any other site". That's mean I should be active on any of this http://stackexchange.com/sites ?

Hi Dmitry, as far as i know we need a total of 200 commitments, but 100 commitments should have a 200+ rep.

"The commitment score is the minimum of three scores:

200 committers in total

100 committers with 200+ rep on any other site
commitment score, based on committers' activity on all other sites and how old the commitment is"

So we need to score good in each category.

I just made a commitment, but even though I have 2.5k reputation of stackoverflow, it the list I am shown with 151 reputation (default I got after logging to area51). Any idea why they didn't count me in the 200+ users, since I saw they should add rep accros stacks?

It really depends how you login. If you have a stackoverflow account or if you login with a 3rd party website.

I suggest trying to relogin with the account that has 2,5k.

Good luck,

Hi,

I like StackOverflow.com (I use it to find Debian Linux related solutions ;-)),
but I see a couple of issues with using external sites / solution-voting-systems systems:

> "But especially the forum seems to be overwhelmed and (if i can say) "outdated". I really don't want to know how many duplicated entries are on that forum."

I see duplicate questions at http://stackoverflow.com/ too! ;-)  I don't think that any system can prevent duplicate posting....
Some people just don't seem to search before posting, other people don't know what to search for (and end up posting similar topics)

I suppose that in the future topics at StackExchanges might get "outdated" too (imagine Joomla 1.5 / 2.5 questions when J3.5 is stable)

Greetings,
Peter

Folks - this is almost getting to be one of those questions you wish someone hadn't asked.

I think it's great when any group of Joomla people get together and try to make something happen that's good for other Joomla people, regardless of where it happens. IMO, it's fine if it's in a boat, with a goat, or in a car driving to a bar, it's all good.

The thought that any good idea should be crowned officially before proving itself is absurd. Prove your idea, first. "Code in hand." But beyond that, I really hate the "have tool, need problem" approach to doing anything. What problem we are trying to solve?

These are facts:
  • The Joomla project derives some income from ads for traffic on it's site. If you don't believe that's important, dig deep: http://opensourcematters.org/support-joomla.html
  • The Joomla project is best able to maintain some quality of support and information on property.
  • The Joomla project will never be able to direct all Joomla questions to it's forums.

It would be much more productive to define who the Joomla forums are intended to support (sorry, "everyone" isn't very useful), who the external resources are intended to support, and how the community can "split up" as it were and put bodies in places where those users are supported.

There was a comment made that the project shouldn't be dependent on external resources. (A comment made in a Google list. Chuckle goes here.) I used to agree with that, but I believe that open source is maturing to the point that vertical services, like CLI testing and, yes, user support, is an option worth considering in the overall portfolio of resources a project should adopt in support of operations.

Personally, I think the developer lists are fine, except there are too many non-developers participating and not enough developers. Developers are not likely going to participate in a group that is not focused on developer topics, so, there is absolutely is good value in clarifying what resources are available for what user profiles and then doing what we can to focus activity towards that goal.

Since there are a number of people interested in the topic of improving overall support, might I recommend a working group team form that is guided by the CLT?

The topic is important but I believe it needs to be more focused and less intent on proving if "this tool" is better than "that tool." It should be about who the project intends to support and how those people will be assisted. It's a strategic question, not a question about tools.

My 2 cents.

If you've already used up all your votes, you should still go back and double check. Sometimes questions get over 10 votes. If one of the questions you voted for has over 10 votes, you can click the upvote icon again, and get that vote back, and apply it to another one that doesn't yet have 10. I did this myself yesterday to take a 12 vote question down to 11 votes, and then push a 9 vote up to a 10.

We've got 200 commitments!

Now we need 24 commiters with 200+ rep. Those who are already made a commitment, but do not have 200+ reputation on any other Stack Exchange site - please read how to get 200+ rep:

Thank you!

Committed and shared on our Joomla! User Group Toronto Facebook page.

Would love to see this happen.  Now to work on the 200+ rep.

Thanks for the links and taking the initiative!

My Proposal for getting the last 19 over 200 reputation:

STEP 1: Let's focus on 'one' site:

Try to get the 200+ Rep on one of those sites for yourself. It's not too hard. Go to a site that interests you. Answer a few questions, or ask a few. Each upvote to your answer is 10 points, to a question is 5 points. An accepted answer is 15 points. It doesn't take long. The experience will help you once we get to Beta.

Since many Joomla-ist are Freelancers, I'm proposing http://freelancing.stackexchange.com/

STEP 2:

Answer some questions on http://freelancing.stackexchange.com/

STEP 3:

Let's get a running list of usernames (StackExchange on the Freelancing site) that are Joomla! committers and need to reach the 200 reputation milestones

Mine is NivF007 and I have a couple of answers there you can vote up.

STEP 4:

Peruse http://freelancing.stackexchange.com/ and vote up the answers for the appropriate usernames.

STEP 5:

Don't forget to link your accounts

---

Okay, I hope I have a correct understanding of how all this works (If not - somebody please clarify) - if so, let's get it done :)!!!

Hope this helps to reach BETA stage faster!

Beta. Perhaps the most important phase. This is the actual, live site set up on a "probationary" basis to see if people use it. It is very important to participate early. The earliest questions set the tone and topic of the site for a long time. This is also the time to spread the word via Twitter, blogs, and email far and wide. If the site does not get used, it will be deleted. Each site has two parts, each with its own URL:
  • topic-name.stackexchange.com: This is where you ask questions, answer questions, tag questions, edit questions, and vote. The beta site starts off with a temporary "sketchy" design; its final design is chosen when the beta period ends.
  • meta.topic-name.stackexchange.com: We don't want to talk about the site on the site itself, so each site has a meta discussion area to talk about things like what questions are appropriate, what tags to use, etc. The meta site is also accessible through the 'meta' link at the top of each page on the main site. This is where you can help make decisions about the site itself.
I know we can do it :)

+1 to all of the above - great to see the effort coming together!!!!

@David
Is there a specific link that mentions that the beta will be PRIVATE and for how long?  This is new information for me, but a great incentive to get people to commit.

Also, the 'bounty' (http://freelancing.stackexchange.com/help/bounty) is great incentive to begin actively building your rep. as soon as possible.  That way, if you need a solid answer to your specific question, you can use your rep points as a bounty - so this is going to be great site to get top quality answers to your specific  Joomla! questions, and to get them fast.

Thanks David - here's what that link says (Earth Science SE Beta)

This site is in

Private Beta
Everyone who committed to the proposal can participate.

The site's Public Beta will begin soon.

Also from http://meta.cs.stackexchange.com/questions/94/how-long-is-the-beta-period

Private betas are evaluated after 7 days. Most become public betas at that point. Sometimes, a private beta that hasn't had enough traffic or that's perceived as low quality might be told to shape up and given an extra period of time to improve.

So it's important that we continue to build critical mass.

I would say that the keys to success are

- keep inviting people to commit who would be interested
- find other SE sites that interest you and ask/answer questions
- start a list of your Joomla! questions to keep on reserve so we can show good activity and quality when hit the Private Beta period

I'm spending 10 to 15 per day on this - it's actually a lot of fun and my appreciation for the Stack Exchange system and what it can do for Joomlaists is growing everyday.

Thanks so much to everybody who is involved.

So yesterday's work did it. We have 95/100 committers with 200+, so that's only 5 left! Get ready for PRIVATE BETA! :)

My proposal is to create a new thread when we will be on the BETA stage. Then everyone should do the best to make it to the PUBLIC BETA. We should stay active!

Nice work all :)

"This proposal has reached 100% commitment. We are preparing for its launch and expect to create it soon."
and
"

This proposal is in:

Commitment

A successful site needs people to commit to use it. This proposal is

100%

complete. Committed users will be invited to the private beta soon."

So it will be private beta trial soon.

I would suggest that Dmitry open a new thread when invites are sent out, to ensure we get the activity required during the 7 days private beta.

Can I suggest a forum post and an announcement on the lists pointing to that post?

I would suggest a title, 'Joomla! Stack Exchange:  Moving from Private Beta to Public Beta'

One advantage is that the owner of the post has control of the first post on that topic, and can edit it later as often as needed.  This would be a good place for instructions, suggestions and guidance - saving us from having to read through long threads.

As far is discussions, those could happen by adding posts - when a new idea or piece of information becomes essential to the effort, you can then edit the top post - I think this will help to keep things more clear and organized.
