Joomla! Developer Conference

Hi,

There will be a conference for experienced third party Joomla!
developers in New York on December 5 and 6. Louis Landry, Andrew
Eddie, Ian MacLennan, Sam Moffatt and Hannes Papenberg along with
Aaron Newton from Moo Tools will be there to talk about working with
1.6, including ACL, JForm, Nested Sets, framework, packaging, MooTools
1.2 and best practices for Joomla development. For more information

Please note that hotel bookings in December in New York are very
tight. Therefore if you need a hotel room you should make reservations
as soon as possible.

For those of us that are thinking about coming...which airport would be best to come in through?

It doesn't seem like the suggested hotel is too far from the conference location (~1.3 miles):

Unfortunately, none of the NY airports are very near Manhattan.
LaGuardia is in Queens and the closest to Manhattan, but it seems like
it's always experiencing delays. JFK is also in Queens but on the
Eastern edge, away from Manhattan. It's a lot nicer than LaGuardia,
but further away. Also nice is Newark, New Jersey, but that's the
furthest away.

My personal preference is JFK, but no matter how you slice it, you'll
probably have to take a taxi cab from the airport and that'll run you
at least $40, possibly more. There does exist public transportation
from JFK but it can be a pain if you have a lot of luggage.

If you end up flying through LGA, however, there's the M60 Bus that takes you all the way to the Columbia area for ~$2 USD.  The ride generally take about 45-50 minutes depending on traffic.

Great info everyone! For sure LaGuardia is the most convenient, but
there are good ways to get to Manhattan from all three.

We are definitely planning to stream the presentations and also will
have them available afterwards.

I think what I said in the email is a really short summary:

Best practices for Joomla development.

That group with some additional speakers will be doing the bulk of
Saturday in an intensive set of sessions about working with 1.6.
Sunday will include more on best practices and security and work on
specific topics. I'm going to be sending out an email to registrants
next week asking for round table/break out topic suggestions; I've
already had a number of people propose topics. We will have a 1.7
discussion to close things out.

That's the rough schedule, definitely subject to change.

Thank you for the info everyone concerning the airports, I ended up getting my ticket to come in through JFK (the flight was a little more direct).

As for the hotel accommodations, the Marrakech ended up being a little too expensive for my wallet at ~$260/night so I looked around and down the street from where the conference will be held (about 1/2 mile)  is a place called L-Hostels which had some more affordable rates (for me at least). Of course you end up sharing space with a few other folks, but overall that shouldn't be a bad thing considering we'll be spending most of our day at the conference.

Hi,

Lol Omar, welcome to the big apple, where the prices are insane. The
Marrakech is a "moderate" hotel in New York, but yes there are a
number of other less expesive places in the neighborhood (as well as
much more expensive ones). There are a bunch of hostels and less
expensive hotels around, and the good thing about Manhattan is that
the mass transit is good so everything is pretty easily accessible.
The Times Square area also has a lot of options and that is a a really
easy subway ride. Also, there are some really inexpensive places in
west Harlem (eg http://www.theinternationalcozyinn.com/) I won't go
thought a list here, but you can find a lot via search.
