I am new to joomla extension development and I am looking for a mentor
to guide me as I train. I need someone to help me train. I know a bit
of php, css, xhtml, xml... but I dont know a fast way yo learn how to
use the Joomla 1.6 API.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Zimboy,

there is a nice book called Learning Joomla! 1.5 Extension Development.
When I needed to write some extensions for Joomla, that's what I read. I
think it's a good guide for starters (though I did miss some stuff in
it, and I used this list to fill this lack of knowledge).

too late already)

Is there any other way?

I wanted to answer the same thing as Ofer Cohen. I want to give you
the revised edition of "Mastering Joomla! 1.5 Extension and Framework
Development". This book by James Kennard is completely revised by
Chuck Lanham and is a must-have for Joomla!-developers. Combine it
with the (also second edition) of Joseph LeBlanc's book and up you
go.

Maybe we should order both books in one time, then the shipping costs
are less. Ofer: if you would arrange it, I will be happy to pay you
for this book. Thanx.

Zimboy, you didn't answer me.
What are the details of the books you need? title & author, ISBN, or
links would be great

Thanks

Ofer, as I said in the private mail to you, we will send the 2nd
editions of the books of James Kennard and Joseph LeBlanc; those are
the best books. We will work out the details, no problem.
https://www.packtpub.com/learning-joomla-1.5-extension-development/book
https://www.packtpub.com/mastering-joomla-1-5-extension-framework-development-2e/book

After the mails in the Googlegroups-mailinglist I received another,
similar request from a student living in the Philippines. I was
thinking of creating a fund and raising some money to do something
like this on a more structural basis. So we can stimulate more people
who cannot easily get access to books themselves to get those books.
Or get them at a discount. Maybe we should talk to the publisher
(PacktPub) about it too. I think it is stimulating if we could send
out some printed books; they are easier for learning than a PDF (but
that could be a start too). Maybe some other sponsors for this? Ideas?
Who joins?

Sorry about the silly question but maybe there is a library on those
place, so we can contribute to library than personal?

I don't think that is silly; it is brilliant!

Structural solutions are the best. Let's think about it a bit further.
I'm curious about the situation there.

A student in the Philipines just mailed me: "Regarding the Library, we
don't have public libraries here. but our school has one. I don't know
other states."

Hie Herman

Joomla students are across the world in almost every country how will
a library function? Wont it be requiring alot of work to manage the
service.

Hey, Zimboy
You didn't answer my question. Did you get the electronic version of the
J! book?

Thanks

Ofer Cohen

@An: we are talking about giving *at our own costs* some books to
people who cannot afford it. So, there are no books for free (at
least: that is not legal and also not good for the people putting a
lot of effort in writing those books). Earlier in this thread I
mentioned the two books that are, in my opinion, the best ones if you
want to learn something about extension development for Joomla!:

https://www.packtpub.com/learning-joomla-1.5-extension-development/book
https://www.packtpub.com/mastering-joomla-1-5-extension-framework-development-2e/book

Both books are available as dead-tree-book and in an electronic
version. By default at PacktPub's site you come on the page with the
combined price, but on another tab is the electronic version. They are
worth the price.

I had those two books sent to someone on the Philipines (it is easy:
you can just pay it and have it sent to someone else); they should
arrive soon. I'm not rich, but obviously the mondial differences in
wealth are so big that some people can comparitively easyly afford it
to have some books sent to someone who cannot afford it. My suggestion
was to to the same for the Lennex from Zimbabwe, but that is something
Ofer wanted to handle; now there seems to be some misunderstanding
about it and my suggestion is to handle that further in private mail,
not on this list. Let me know if there are still misunderstandings
about it. I would just send those two books (hardcopy version) to
Zimbabwe - I even want to pay them too - and then we can have a look
how to start something more structural. A good sugggetion from Amy was
to also be available as a mentor to students; and that was also the
original question in this thread.

I made a suggestion to start a fund for it:
http://www.alltogetherasawhole.org/profiles/blogs/a-fund-for-people-who-dont
. Got a mail from someone living from a Social Security Income showing
poverty is not just something for poor countries. Of course we cannot
change the world completely, but we can make a small difference and it
could be a signal to others. It is in the true spirit of Open Source
and Joomla!.

Coincidentally (?) last week someone from PacktPub asked me to write
some reviews of Joomla!-books they publish. I immediately asked him
what the possibilities would be for a discount for our fund or maybe
even some free books. Well, there are some possibilities. So I will
first make a website (of course), open a bank account and put up some
organisation. In the mean time it has been busy here (with the balance
in favour of non-paid jobs...I might be doing something wrong): still
no website, organisation etc. This week I'll have to finish some
things and then I will work on this first. Any help is appreciated.
I'll keep you posted.

Salutations cordiales,
Herman
