Júlio Pontes has proposed a new easy-to-use override system in the following tracker item:

The override plugin allows you to override components and modules.  Could you all take a look, test, and offer your thoughts on it?  Here's a link to the tracker item:

Kind regards,
Nick

I don't like that the plugin requires changes the class names in core in order to override them. As soon as you do that, you prevent the end user from upgrading whatever component/joomla core/module whatever that they have overridden, and lock them in. The purpose of overrides is to allow a user to override, while still being able to upgrade, but since your implementation requires changes to core files in order to extend, it's kind of a broken implementation, don't you think?

I was premature in my criticisms, as this doesn't require core changes, since you're doing all the re-writing in memory instead of actually writing out the files. Very clever idea. Have you done tests to see if it impacts loading speed on the website?
