Hi,

I just got the good news: Joomla! has been granted another year to use
PhpStorm.

Please contact me, if you want the license key. Mail me directly using
the sender address of this mail, *not here on the list*. I'm most likely
going to ignore non-PM requests.

"Develop with pleasure!"

Regards,
Niels

Hi Niels,

If you could send me a licence for PhpStorm, that would be great.

Many thanks,

Forgive me for asking, why PHPStorm over free open-source Eclipse - is this preference due to easier unit testing/debugging?

I need to focus on one IDE to really learn it inside out - anybody knowledgeable on the differences who could help guide the decision would be great!

When I switched from Eclipse to PhpStorm in 2011, I enjoyed its ease of use, better performance, and better tool integration (I've found it easier to integrate with GitHub and local command line tools like PHPUnit in PhpStorm over Eclipse), and those have only improved in the time since.  The one thing that annoyed me that I've now learned to work around was the fact you can't put more than one project in a window.  Another selling point was it being cross-platform; though last I knew Eclipse is too (I jump between Windows and Mac, so the less differences in work environments, the better).

Thanks Michael!

I've been researching this for a while to decide which to use (NetBeans vs. Eclipse vs. PHPStorm vs. Aptana), so it's great to hear from experienced people.

While I know it largely comes down to preference, the comparisons I've read usually give PHPStorm the edge for debugging and unit testing.

I will definitely give PHP Storm a shot.

Much appreciated!

Hi Niels.

Has the licence been renewed?

Many thanks in advance.

Not yet. JetBrains says:

"As I recall Mikhail Vink (PhpStorm PMM) asked you last year to mention
that you use PhpStorm for open source development somewhere on Joomla!
pages, did you manage to do that?"

I don't know, what to respond. Any hints, anybody?

Niels

Well we mention it here http://issues.joomla.org/documentation/view/?page=Dependencies&path=Development

But it's a fair point we really should put them on the partners page of joomla.org in my opinion. I dunno who would be in charge of doing that?

Kind Regards,
George

There is a mention of PHPStorm on an official Joomla! page here:
http://issues.joomla.org/documentation/view/?page=Dependencies&path=Development

This page is generated from the official repository:
https://github.com/joomla/jissues/blob/master/Documentation/Development/Dependencies.md#jetbrains-phpstorm

Hope that helps ;)

We should try to get this addressed this week.  I'll bring it up again.

As of today, we have no PHP Storm license for Joomla. I know more than a few folks that are very thankful to have access to this license.

I have been told that:
"
There has been a couple leadership discussions about the best way to promote their sponsorship of the project.
We should see some announcements made soon.
… :) Not to worry
"

On the other hand I can understand Jetbrains if they decide not to renew the free licenses they granted to Joomla! developers.

If the Joomla! project decides not to give any credits (a link on an official page) to Jetbrains, then one might think that there is actually no need for those licenses.

Regards,
Nikolai

This is correct and we're coming close to a quick conclusion.

One thing that I'd add to that, and I hope Jetbrains reads this, is that I  and others have moved from the free license for the Joomla project to a paid one so that we can use it for other purposes. I'm currently on my second year of using it as a paid product and will continue to do so.

Yep - I agree ... most people will do the right thing and move to a paid licence if they find it useful and use outside the project.

I am also wondering, if this is widely used and  support is for and by both parties, how come J-team haven't added a plugin to Joomla support to the phpstorm plugins ... surely that would be a good selling point and add strength to working in Joomla?

There's a manual process described at http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_CodeSniffer#PHPStorm ... but drupal, wp, magenta & many others have invested in properly integrating via the phpstorm plugin repo at http://plugins.jetbrains.com/category/index?pr=phpStorm&category_id=43 - something for the list?

Or do most people use "free" IDE/code environments (even though phpstorm has offered free licence to those contributing to joomla)  .... and if so, what is "recommended" within the Jooma dev community?

Just my thoughts - Thx,

Max

I definitely find using it useful and use it for use in the project (and am not going to for the foreseeable future gonna have the money to afford it). It is awesome to have this association!

Hi everyone,

We now have a "Credits and Thanks" page at http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla!_Credits_and_Thanks which we will be linking to as it seems fit. As this page is part of the document site, it will be a living document and members of the community can help maintain It. Members of the leadership teams will be monitoring changes to that document to ensure edits are appropriate.

Thanks everyone!

Well, this is a good start ;)

Since the wiki page seems to be a copy of this page:
http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla/the-project/partners.html
maybe the "original" could be updated?

Thanks everyone :)

Yes, the page, http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla/the-project/partners.html was used as a starting point. The new page, http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla!_Credits_and_Thanks is available as a community maintained page. Please feel free to update it.

One of the issues(IMHO) we have as a community is a multitude of redundant content on many pages. Pages are created, leadership comes and goes, and some content pages fall through the cracks and never get updated because they are forgotten. By creating a page on docs now anyone can help maintain the content.
