Given the recent exchange on the main listserv about crime incidents and
concern relative to the bike trail, I wonder if we might consider exploring
the use of video cameras at strategic points along the trail. Seems very
big brother, I know, but they would not affect the well-intended and could
be a good deterrent/investigative tool in the case of malicious incidents.
It is unreasonable to expect more than the occasional patrol by the bike
police. Not wedded to this idea, but perhaps it should be canvassed (if it
hasn't been already) ...

Best regards -

Please note that the Pediatric Hospital has offered to supply cameras
to be monitored by their security service for the portion of the trail
that traverses their property. This would include cameras in the
playground area.

As chair of the Jones Falls Trail Committee, I'd be happy to explore
with City officials the possibility of cameras in places along the
trail. But it strikes me as an issue that would first need some
discussion and approval of the improvement association. (And remember,
other than the section that goes through the Hospital's property,
there won't be all that much of the trail in Mt. Washington proper.
We can hardly demand cameras be placed on sections of the trail in
neighborhoods other than our own.)

As to earlier comments posted on the Mt. Washington listserv, I would
just say that the Board's vote in support of the trail was made after
considerable discussion of security concerns and many other issues.

If new information comes to light during the planning process that is
so fully at odds with what we knew when we voted, then we should
discuss whether the project still warrants our support.

But I would reject the idea that we should push for a different route
- or even no trail at all - based on people raising the very same
issues that were discussed for many months before and then right up to
the Board vote.
