The software processors under review here, Algorithmix's Linear Phase PEQ Red and Classic PEQ Blue, seem set to take the digital plug-in advantage to a new level, going well beyond what is feasible (or even possible) in any kind of outboard, digital or analogue. According to Algorithmix, their Red EQ offers not only linear phase purity of sound, but also a unique proprietary technology which allows for continuous slope adjustment of shelving filters: for details, see www.algorithmix.com/en/peq1.htm. Blue, meanwhile, is a modelling design offering "the most complete collection of classic equalisers ever in one plug-in", importantly including two designs which have analogue sonic characteristics, but which are "impossible to implement in the analogue domain".
I will mention before providing this roundup of important plugins when working in audio post-production, that properly capturing the source (whether it be dialog or sound effects) by choosing the correct microphone(s), and proper placement and recording technique, is more important than knowing what the latest noise-reduction plugin is.

The Tremolator is fantastic for adding warble to sci-fi elements, the Crystallizer can help you generate ghostly reverse delay effects, and FilterFreak is great for pulsing, rhythmic filters. EchoBoy (which has nearly endless musical applications) is one of my go-to delay plugins for when I need to create a natural-sounding echo in an actual environment.

This is such a great and versatile plugin that makes futzing a breeze. The presets are fantastic and range from headphones, radios and TVs to weird (but still useful) stuff like megaphones or old cell phones.
Anytime I work on dialogue, I always use this plugin to pull out ringing frequencies. I have found this plugin to be perfect for dialogue because it does not color the sound in harsh ways. The studio has the entire bundle on all mix stages and edit bays.

A favourite emulation of the classic Pultec EQ we mentioned earlier. So many companies have done their own Pultec emulations, you could write a whole separate list. Other totally worthy mentions are the Nomad Factory Pulse-Tec EQ set, the EQP-1A that comes as part of the IK Multimedia T-rackS bundles, and not forgetting the free Leftover Lasagne Pushtec 5+1A.
Available for Mac and PC users of a UAD-2 DSP Accelerator PCIe card (installed inside a PC), UAD-2 Satellite DSP Accelerator (standalone hardware units), or one of Apollo series of audio interfaces.
