Shooting in the 1300 block of Joliet

Jerry Speir received several notices from the 2nd District recently.
Though they are undated, but the first one appears to be the shooting
that took place on sat night.



[No date/time – but this appears to be the shooting from Saturday
night, 8/2]



Shooting – 1300 blk Joliet Street

Victim 1 was sitting on the side porch of 1320 Joliet when two unknown
males approached from the Willow street side of the residence and
began to fire shots toward him and two others that were sitting on the
porch. The victim ran into the side door of the residence and was
struck once in the left calf. Victim 2 stated that she was sitting on
the front porch of 1320 Joliet when she observed two unknown blacks
walk past the residence staring toward the home. She observed the
males walk down Willow and several seconds later heard gunshots from
the area that she last observed the males. She then attempted to flee
into the residence when she was struck once in the left hand. The
victims stated that they have never observed the males before but
could identify them if seen again. No shell casings were found on the
scene but several bullet holes were observed and two projectiles were
recovered.

[No date/time] Armed Robbery – 8700 block of Birch

The victim stated she exited her vehicle in front of 8723 Birch St.
when she observed a black male running from the corner of Birch and
Eagle St. The victim stated the subject accosted her as she entered
the gate to the residence at 8723 Birch St. and placed a black semi-
auto handgun to her head. The victim stated the perpetrator demanded
money and she handed him her purse as she pleaded for her life. The
victim stated the perpetrator advised her not to look at his face and
fled West on Birch and then South on Eagle St.

Suspect Unknown Black Male 30-35yo 5'07" 150#

[No date/time] Shooting – Leonidas & Green Streets

Officers responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of
Leonidas and Green Streets. As EMS treated the unconscious driver of
the vehicle that struck a parked vehicle they observed that the
subject had a puncture wound to the right side of his stomach. The
subject was then transported to University Hospital. X-rays revealed
that the subject suffered from a gunshot to the abdomen and was listed
in critical condition. Detectives located the registered owner of the
vehicle who stated his brother had borrowed the car. The physical
description of the owner’s brother and the victim matched. Due to the
medical condition of the victim officers were unable to obtain his
statement.

Pursesnatching – S Carrollton & Plum Street

The victim was walking to her vehicle which was parked at the
intersection of S. Carrollton and Plum from her work at 1200 S.
Carrollton. The victim was approached by a black male who was walking
on Plum from the S. Carrollton median. As the victim approached her
vehicle the perpetrator snatched her purse from her shoulder and fled
up Plum, river bound, then unknown. The perpetrator was described as
being tall, thin, black male, brown complexion, and short hair.

Aggravated Assault – 1800 blk of Leonidas Street

The victim stated he and the arrested subject (his neighbor) were
involved in a verbal argument about the neighbor's dog chasing his
kids. The victim stated the arrested subject entered his residence on
Leondias St. and returned with a brown handle shotgun. The victim
stated the arrested subject pointed the shotgun at him as he knocked
on the door to enter his residence.

Detective McGhee interviewed the stepson of the victim who stated
when he opened the door he observed the arrested subject standing in
the yard pointing brown handle shot gun at the victim.

Murder – 8600 block of Hickory


On Friday, July 25, 2008, at approximately 3:59 pm, reports of gunfire
were dispatched at the intersection of Leonidas and Hickory St., with
a red Pontiac fleeing the scene headed in the wrong direction on
Hickory St., eastbound. Second District units arrived at the scene
and found a black male, later identified as Jerrold Smith lying on his
right side, inside the residence at 8613 Hickory St., with no signs of
life.

Casings were located approximately two houses down from where the
victim was found. EMS arrived on the scene and performed life
preserving measures, but was met with negative results.

UPDATE – Armed Robbery – 1400 blk of Dublin (E-20834-08)

On July 23, 2008, LAWRENCE WILLIAMS B/M 3-14-1955 was arrested on
Hamilton for carrying a gun. by the 2nd District Task Force. WILLIAMS
matched the description of several Armed Robberies perpetrators, so
2nd District Detectives conducted follow-up investigation and were
able to arrest WILLIAMS for the Armed Robbery in the 1400 block of
Dublin Street in May (E-20834-08). WILLIAMS is suspected of
perpetrating other Armed Robberies and will be aggressively
investigated to determine his role in those crimes.

Aggravated Assault – 8400 Oak Street

On Monday, 07/21/08 at about 6:15p.m., the victim was walking in the
8400 block of Oak Street. The victim observed several juveniles
throwing rocks at his neighbor’s dog. The victim shouted at the
juveniles to stop. The juveniles stop and started walking towards
Joliet Street. One juvenile black female wearing a pink and yellow sun
dress turned around and pointed a box cutter in the victim's face. The
juvenile then fled the scene.

Simple Robbery – South Carrollton & Nelson Street

The victim stated he was walking on South Carrollton Avenue towards
the bus stop. As he reached its intersection with Nelson Street he
was approached from the rear by five unknown black male juveniles.
One of the subjects then grabbed the victim's bag from his grasp and
stated, "Now what you gonna do?" The suspect then fled down Nelson
Street towards Dublin Street, then unknown. The victim relocated to
South Carrollton and South Claiborne Avenues where he notified the
police. The victim described the suspects as black male juveniles
approximately 12 to 14 years in age.
