Hi Join-Us Team,
Hope everyone is doing great.I am Prabhu and am part of the Chennai Join-Us team. I will try to give a detailed account of what was done on the 26th of January when we visited a home for the mentally retarded and spastics. The home is called as Samarpana and they care for mentally retarded people from a very wide age-group.
Credit goes to Gowri Shankar,Raghav,Shivshankar and Loganathan for doing the intial organizing and the spade-work of finding the organization which is need of funds and determining how best to help them with the kind of money which we have. A cab was arranged to goto the suburban area of Kolathur which is where the mentally retarded home is situated and there were 8 of us namely Gowrishankar,Prabhu,Praveena,Priya,Raghav,Sharanya,Shivshankar and Suresh.
After talking it over with the person who runs the home, it was decided that the following would be donated to the home.
40 bedsheets,
10
mats,
a waterfilter,
a mixer,
50 kg rice,
50 packets of biscuits, and
2 kilos of sweets.
Upon reaching the home we were introduced to the people who lived there. There were people right from 4 years old to 67 years. And most of them were either orphans or people who were picked off the street and who were being cared for by Samarpana. The home has 2 floors and the ground floor has lodging facilities for the people while the 1st floor has 3 classrooms where children and other inmates. These classrooms are primarily filled with small games and other activities which help in developing the person's thought processing ability. The organization takes a holistic view of development where the person is enabled to take care of himself/herself without depending on others.
To hear of some of the facts about the people who live there was in hindsight extremely heart-rending... children who were abandoned in the street by parents bcoz they were
mentally retarded and older inmates who did not have anyone to care for them.We were given a warm welcome and we met with some of the children there. The inmates of the home also try their hands at candle making and card-making primarily as ways to keep away from boredom and as a way to evolve their ability to do things on their own and not as a way to obtain financial gain.
We then gave them the provisions and the other things which we had bought and we also had a talk with Mrs.K.Bhavani(who is the founder of the home)about the other needs of the organization(with the probability of doing something similar in the future). The day being republic Day,we had bought some sweets and chocolates. After a small flag-raising ceremony we distributed sweets and some of the biscuits to the children.I would venture far enough to state that this is the most meaningful Republic Day that i have spent and most of the people who came there echoed the same opinion. And the credit goes
to the whole Join-Us team in this regard. The joy of doing something to people who are in need of it without expecting something can only be felt when we see the gratitude in the eyes of the people there and i am sure that we did (all of us) spent a far more worthwhile republic day(its a coincidence that this event timed with the Republic Day) than a normal person.
Another point which is to be noted is that we have a surplus of Rs.3600 from the funds which was collected and which was supposed to be spent on this event alone. But since we deemed that what we had done was enough we decided to keep the remaining amount in balance and take it forward to the next event. We talked about this issue and there were some suggestions put forward on the best way to utilise this money. One of the suggestions was that....
-->Join Us as a team has grown over the past year and simultaneously the amount of money which we have, to spend on a single event has also got larger. We
might have crossed the stage where we spend all the money collected from all members on a single event.... (For example... even though we had 3600 extra from the event... we are sure that we did give most of what the organization (Samarpana) needed). One idea was that we can identify a place or an organization in very extreme need of money or in dire financial straits and we can support that organization by giving them a monthly (with no commitments) amount and i guess we would still have enough money to continue with our quarterly events. All ideas and any critiques of the above idea can be put forward in the forum and we can discuss about it.
I will sign off saying that i m proud to be part of Join-Us and so should everyone of us....
Regards,
Prabhu
