Uncaught TypeError: _.merge is not a function

I keep getting this error , and I think it's something to do with underscore, lodash and jointjs 

(the error is in line 4453 of joint.js )

 attrs = _.merge({}, defaults, attrs);

Am I right in thinking that backbone uses underscore, whilst jointjs uses lodash ?

Is this something that can be resolved ?
