Just outside of Palm Springs we found the Indian Canyons (on an Indian reservation). We wanted to do some hiking that would take us more into the "real" desert. There are creeks and springs there that can be spotted by the clusters of huge palm trees that grow by their life-giving water. The palm trees aren't at all like the ones back home. They're Fan Palms, California's only native species of palm tree. The old fronds don't fall off, they just make a huge shirt around the bottom of the tree, making them thick and a substantial source of shade. It was a palm tree forest, cool and comfortable even as the surrounding temps rose into the 100's. Sara and Laura explored the creek area, following along it's banks. Megan and I took a different trail that lead us to a wonderful waterfall amidst the rocks. We climbed up and around and behind, reveling in the crystal clear water.
