So we recently improved the CfP functionality on joind.in, showing
which events have open CfPs. If you look at the homepage of the site
now, there are a whole bunch of them visible on the sidebar. Half of
them however have no URL for the CfP and I don't believe they have any
intention of running a CfP - they've just put the dates in so that the
event shows more prominently on the site.

I'm not sure whether this is a problem or not, or if we want to stop
this from happening, or how we would do that. Does anyone have any
thoughts?

My thoughts:
  • CfPs without a URL aren't actually very useful; the URL could be mandatory?  Although that would just mean that the events would give their homepage as the CfP URL, which isn't the end of the world
  • If this is being done purely for prominence on the homepage, then there must be better ways of gaining homepage prominence (eg "newly-added events", or a different "hot" algorithm, or a more dedicated selection of content on the homepage, or something like that).

Hi,

I agree that a CfP without a URL is not useful.

I'm wondering -new to the mailinglist- if it would be an option to make the display an admin-approved option:

* You can specify you have a CfP
* You need to enter a URL to the CfP page on your website
* As soon as this is verified and approved, the link is shown in the box on the homepage

This of course adds work to admins, so I'm not sure if this is a valid option.

I agree with this idea, however it would generate work for admins.
Unless you can get together a team of moderators (which, honestly, I
think would not really be a problem) this would make it a bit harder.

I do agree that the cfp url should be required if they want to run a
cfp. Otherwise the whole feature is useless anyway.

Hey, new to the mailing list, but my thoughts:

CfP url should be filled, because without it, it is kind of pointless. They can still mark they have a CfP so if a user notices on their event page there is a CfP, they can go to their website and try to find it.

As for validating whether or not they *actually* have a CfP, I think it would be worth it. I asked Lorna her guess estimate on events that sign up each week, and she said 2. So adding in moderation right now wouldn't be difficult for a small group of moderators, especially if we made it easy where it would email the moderators the necessary links to check out.

My two cents.

I think there is a feature/issue currently in Jira that would allow a
user that has an event approved by an administrator, automatically
approve new administrators. Sort of a web-of-trust kind of thing
basically. That would eliminate the need for administrators while still
maintaining control over the events posted. Could be expanded by 2 or 3
approvals, but the idea would be the same.

I'm not sure how Chris and Lorna like this idea, but it would save a lot
of verification / time on the whole.

(bringing this thread back to life)

I'm not sure the CfP URL really needs to be required. I'd amend it by saying that, if they say they have an open CfP, they must have *either* the Event's URL or the CfP URL filled in. At least that'll always give the user some way to get back to their site.

Why not require the CfP URL. The reason for registering the CfP on
joind.in would be to get people to go to the CfP and submit. And why
would joind.in want to display the CfP when there is no link to the
CfP information?

I agree, it makes no sense to say that you have a CfP without a CfP URL.

Works for me :) So, any of the devs out there want to take it? (bug: http://joindin.jira.com/browse/JOINDIN-118)
