I was thinking about implementing badges. So before people will be
respond with "we don't need no steekin' badges" or "badges are so 2010"
or even "badgesbadgesbadgesmushroommushroom", I think it might be a cool
feature to have where it can even convince some people to do the extra
mile when it comes to commenting on joind.in (the whole point).

I was thinking on badges like:
- speaker: when you have 1 claimed talk
- super speaker: when you have 10 claimed talks
- organizer: when you are admin on 1 event
- super organizer: when you are admin on 10 events

- commenter lvl 1: 1 comment
- commenter lvl 2: 10+ comments
- commenter lvl 3: 50+ comments
- super commenter: when you have commented to all talks on a conference
(minimum of 10 talks on the conference), or something like that.

- attendee lvl 1: attending 1 events
- attendee lvl 2: attending 10+ events
- attendee lvl 3: attending 50+ events

- traveler: attending conferences on different continents

Implementing would not be very difficult and I'd like to take a stab at
it, but I'd like to know if I'm the only one liking the idea.

Sounds like a great feature, and badges are still hot (as we've seen the number of checkins during PHPBenelux Conference 2012). And I believe you're right, it can motivate people to rate more talks as an achievement award is tied to it.

so for me a +1, thumbs up, favorite ;-)

Hi,

I think it's a great idea. but we shouldn't just include quantity-based badges, we should promote quality feedback. So for instance, also add badges for people leaving longer comments (like: over 250 chars, over 500 chars etc) and perhaps there should be a way for speakers to mark feedback as useful, and then the commenters could perhaps also get badges when 1, 5, 10, 20 etc of their comments have been marked as useful :)

Agreed

That would take some additional work, since it would mean we need to add
another button, but I like the idea a lot.

I think more people are interested about the idea, and I think setting
up such a system would take time, but should be doable. I'd like to take
a stab at it.

Beside the backend-part, there must be some frontend work as well:
creating the actual badges (like 4square), or maybe use simple designs
like the ones on stackoverflow.
And we must find out where these badges should be placed on the site itself.

I've created an issue (http://joindin.jira.com/browse/JOINDIN-160) for now.

I like the idea of badges, but feel we should be a bit more creative with the naming of the badges.  Also, don't want to get too crazy with it.  I think a polyglot badge, for attending/speaking on more than 1 language would be cool, but not sure how easy to track.
