an IM-based payment system might be a game changer in doing small transactions like splitting the bill, paying at the checkout counter or paying for freelance services.

Hi guys,

How are you?

A)  How is the YC presentation and the product development coming along?

B)  It was good meeting up with you guys last week.  After we met up, I think I am more clear in my mind that Peer needs to be laser-focused on being the product/solution for sales & marketing people within companies, or SMBs, to generate sales leads.  Its a tool that people can give out freely and allow other people to easily connect with them.  Professional instant messenger that creates instant leads.  Be laser focused on creating one solution that early adopters, sales people/people want to chat with others as potential sales/revenue leads, will want to use.  There is a story to tell around this.  Other stuff, no story, at least not yet.  The below article and the blog article by Pipedrive from Anthony all reinforces the concepts of:
1.  being laser-focused on one vertical market
2.   that one vertical market is sales leads
There are too many noises and too many other players in consumer-related chatting tools fields.  There is missing professional chatting tool for businesses & professionals.  Focus on solving this for them.

C)  I still believe Joi.IM has a shot to become a good solution and to be sold.

If you believe in what I am saying about B) &C) AND you want me to be part of it to get B) & C) done, you let me know.

Hi Jeh,

Yes, we just realized that our offering lacks enterprise solutions, and we decided to focus on enterprise features. We will be concentrating on YC application and implementing enterprise features so that we can differentiate ourselves from other consumer instant messaging products. Maybe we can talk about our marketing and biz dev strategy when we have our enterprise feature done?

Thanks

Johnson

HI Johnson,

Thanks for the reply.

1)  Just happened to saw the YC application, looks better, not too sure if you guys are still working on it.

2)  What enterprise features will you be implementing?  What is your product plan?  Go sign up as many professional/enterprise products as possible, ex. yammer, pipedrive, chatter, jive etc, see what they do to make their products an enterprise/professional product.  What does corporate IT want in a product like this?  What do professional users want in a product like this?

3)  This would be a checklist of what I think needs to get done:
a.  get product ready for initial launch, i) UI/UX ii) product works
b.  website
c.  sign-up process
d.  service plans and features for each plan
e.  strategic plan for marketing, biz dev, and partnerships
There are obviously lots of details to each, but if you nailed them, packaged it altogether, you are ready to go.

4)  You need non-engineer/technical person to join the team, preferrably hands-on overall CEO-ish leader who can lead the entire company, if not that level, then at least product/biz dev/partnership/marketing hands-on person as co-founder.

5)  I still think joi do im has potential to have something happen to it

Hi Jeh,

I am still finishing up a collaboration feature so I haven't put too much thought into enterprise features. One thing that comes to my mind is company branding. One pitch I came up with when people ask me the difference between us and gchat or skype will be: "We are enterprise IM. Just like when you go work for Toyota, you will get an @toyota.com email address. They won't ask you to sign up for an @gmail.com email address. Similarly, you want an IM to go with your business too". We need to to put more thought into customizing our IM solution for enterprise so that we can be white labeled. However, I don't have the specifics now. Account management will also be another feature for enterprise.

Angelo is working on UI and sign up process right now. After he is done with that and I am done with my collaboration feature, we should be ready to launch for individuals.

joi.im might have potential, but if somebody asks us to add features or support, we may not have time for it.

HI Johnson,

1) Yup, enterprise features would/could consist of the following:
a.  encryption
b.  user account management, setup, delete, user permission controls, AD/SSO integration, user self sign-up's etc
c.  customized branding/URL masking
d.  audit trail tracking
e.  chat history
f.  integration with CRMs
g.  premium features, ex paypal, scheduling etc (although some of these may be more for individual professionals)
This is obviously not a complete list, more features will be developed based on
2) Again, study LeapFILE, Yammer, other SaaS enterprise product/professional service startups, sign up for their trial/free versions, and see what makes them enterprise/paid business product vs consumer product

3)  If the UI/UX, sign-up process, and website are all revamped, yes, you are ready to launch, because sales people can now sign-up for it individually and start using it right away, and validate whether if this is a tool that helps them to reach more people/people reach them.  Mobile app is key though, which I know is a bandwidth/resource issue.

4)  Since you are into accelerators, I strongly suggest you apply to enterprise startup accelerator Alchemist Accelerator.  Their deadline is also 3/30th, so you might as well do it.  I think this accelerator suits you the best, and from what I know, they should be interested in the concept of Peer.  But I strongly recommend that you be very enrterprise/business product focused, ie this is a business product/enterprise (business instant messenger or business version of about dot me with real-time chat) for sales people to generate sales leads.  Their first class have a couple of startups that focus on CRMs and sales people/leads.
http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/06/enterprise-startup-accelerator-gets-boost-from-cisco/ (read this article so you know what they are looking for.  Its also a great article to read!)
http://www.alchemistaccelerator.com/

5)  If you were to apply to Alchemist, I invite that you put my name into the application, as either co-founder or advisor.  MY background in LeapFILE/Oxygen Cloud, along with the fact that I am entrepreneur, should help.  I would be interested to join the company if you get into Alchemist.  This, of course, is up to you, your decision.

6)  Per my earlier email, we should probably finalize and decide on my involvement with your venture moving forward into the future.
a.  just friends, no shares or ownership
b.  co-founder ish level or someone with equity in the company and hands-on work on the venture on non-technical side
c.  "advisor" or "consultant" with written goals/specific milestones/commitment (like meeting up once a week/month), ex. team building, product development, website, marketing plan, sales, biz dev, fund raising etc, in return for smaller equity (I prefer this, and this can lead into greater role)
Pls let me know your thoughts, thanks.

7)  For whatever I have worked with you up to this point, kindly also let me know if you would like to give me some ownership/equity, or nothing. If yes, what would it be.  Again, no hard feelings, no worries.

To summarize on 6) and 7),
a.  If you think I have done something of value for you in the past, and you think I can be compensated for it in some ways, let me know.  If nothing, no worries, its ok.
b.  If you think I can be of value in the future, as advisor/consultant or to work alongside with you guys, let me know.  If the answer is no, its ok.
I just want to finalize this, so I can plan out my future career options and move on, thanks.  We can talk in person, so to perhaps clarify this.

8)  As for Joi dot IM.  If I really want to do something with it, I will see if I can find my own help and drive/productize it to certain level and see if I can sell the product.  If you are open to it, let me know.

Hi Jeh,

Thanks for telling us about Alchemist Accelerator. We will apply. For now, we need to concentrate on finishing up our product by the end of March so that we can have a smooth demo for incubators and any prospective customers.

As for joi.im, we are willing to offload it to other people and maintain partial ownership of the product if you can find help.

Thanks

Johnson

Hi Johnson,

No problem.  Yup, product is the most crucial and the only thing or now, aside from applying to these accelerators and clearly present the concept/product.  Good luck with Alchemist, YC.  Btw, did you create company profile for Peer on AngelList?

Regarding my earlier questions 6) & 7), have you given thoughts to this, or do you want to respond to it later, after finishing up the product?  Like I said, whatever you guys decide, its fine, no hard feelings.

As for Joi.IM, I will let you know if I decide to take on this project.  Thanks,

HI Angelo,

Thanks for the email, no problem.  I will be going to LA for another one-day business trip on Tuesday.  How about meeting up on Wed or Thurs, either Specialty Cafe or your office, for lunch or coffee?

Good luck on the applications, let me know if you would like for me to check it out and help with anything.

Also, how is the next release?  Haven't seen anything new on the site, but I am sure you guys are working on "relaunching"?

Good luck, rock on,

Pretty good stuff, both video and canvas.  There are some typo's in the canvas, but pretty good, especially the first few slides.

I can't do lunch Wed, Thurs is ok for me, let me know if that work for you.
