However it is possible to put an addition into /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions and it can then freely inject into system processes. This technique was discovered and described by SIMBL developers. The problem is that /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions is a system folder protected by SIP. You can manipulate it only with SIP fully disabled or from within Recovery OS.

By default TotalFinder installs its scripting addition into /Library/ScriptingAddtions. Then you can manually move it to /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions. TotalFinder is aware of this setup since version 1.7.10.

Again you have to go into Recovery OS, mount your main system disk and remove TotalFinder.osax from /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions. My uninstaller cannot do that because it is a SIP-protected location.

In order to change some features of Finder, we use a technique called code injection. This means we add some additional code to the Finder program whilst it is running to do what we need. This is relatively safe - in fact we do not change any part of macOS on the disk. You only have to quit Finder via Command+Option+Esc, and the Finder will restart and everything will be as if TotalFinder was never running.

However, in El Capitan and later the macOS developers added a feature that disallows this kind of modification even if you have administrator access. It will also disallow other kinds of modifications (such as replacing parts of the system on disk).

In order for TotalFinder to be able to do code injection into Finder.app we need a help from the system. We need to install a special system component which allows circumventing SIP restrictions just in this special case. To install this system component the SIP must be temporarily disabled. When you disable SIP and run TotalFinder, it prompts you to install its system component in the location /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions/TotalFinderSIP.osax. When you turn SIP back on it will allow TotalFinder to inject into Finder.app.

This should be one-time setup. This component usually does not change between TotalFinder versions. So it should not ask you to repeat these steps with each TotalFinder update. When we need to update this component for some reason, TotalFinder will prompt you and guide through the upgrade process. You can visit this page to see the list of historical versions of the component with reasons to replace it.

Every week we post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

At the university, half of my students use Windows and the other half macOS. Microsoft Word is a standard, so I purchased Microsoft Office 2011 a few years ago and still use it on a regular basis. Nevertheless, I prefer using Nisus Writer Pro to write novels. I also use a few dictionaries such as Antidote Druide, the Collins-Robert French-English, and Le Grand Robert. PDFpenPro is la crme de la crme with powerful features, and TextExpander saves me a great deal of time.

Pretty much the same apps are found in my iPhone, my iPad, and my Mac. I like Fantastical, and Overcast keeps me entertained with podcasts. Here in Taiwan and Japan, LINE is THE app used to communicate on regular basics.

I have tried Arrange By Kind and Sort By Name only later to have the alphabetical arrangement completely screwed up. So I tried Arrange By Name and Sort By Kind only to have it STILL get screwed up. I've tried Arrange By None and Sort By Kind or Sort By Name and still it doesn't freaking work.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and does anyone know how the **** to fix it, because I'm going nuts constantly having to rearrange my files since Mavericks is apparently too stupid to do it properly.

Drag a couple photos to the desktop, then you go to a website to load photos, select desktop and it shows you one photo from months ago under "today" with nothing next to it, then there is last month and no matter how hard you look the one you just put on the desktop IS NOT VISIBLE IN THE DESKTOP FOLDER!!! without manually changing the sorting option. Its becoming increasingly hard for a life time Apple customer to grasp on the naive hope as Apple keeps jabbing at us with crap that we don't want like computers with no ports, upgradability and now no ability to find files. C'mon Apple, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I've had this issue ever since they introduce "Arrange by...", as for whatever reason, there's never been a way to save this view option for all folders. Mavericks has made it much worse, as it continually forgets this preference for folders I've already set to Arrange by Kind, Sort by Name.

But, yes, in Mavericks, it's only a matter of time before it re-sorts itself into some ungodly random arrangement. It's infuriorating to have to do over and over again, so I hope that this is addressed soon.

Same exact thing happens to me ?. I always have to re-arrange my folders/files by clicking on the sort-arrow. It's getting very frustrating becuase I like to keep my computer organized!!!! It's not a big deal but its very anoying. Hopefully Apple fixes this issue in the next update.

YES! Mavericks is a psychotic mess in Finder. Nearly EVERY time I open it, files and folders are in a different order. I've literally watched them rearrange before my eyes! Sometimes it's alphabetical, sometimes reverse alphabetical and then back to alphabetical. I've done NOTHING.

Anyone know of a way to at least get the folders back above other documents? (Seriously, this is over two thousand years of standard hierarchical organization prototocol of categories and sub categories and Apple thought they had a better way...)

instead of using arrange by kind, I have changed the view settings to "arrange by application" and then "sort by name" and it seems to have stabilised and stopped randomly switching everything around of its own accord and returned to how "arrange by kind" used to look. so far, so good.

The "arrange by kind" option also used to have the problem that the 'kind' headers (i.e. 'Folders', 'Images', 'PDF Documents', 'Other', etc.) used to sometimes disappear and sometimes turn into folder icons that couldn't be selected. At least this appears to have stabilized in Mavericks.

It works fine for bringing the app into focus and even launching it if need be, but unlike TotalFinder's Visor feature, Path Finder does not pop up "over any desktop" (OS X will slide you back to the desktop the app is open in if need be). I guess that this would be the same functionality via Keyboard Maestro.

You can then link this code to some hotkey (for example with Keyboard Maestro). Make sure that the Finder window is not linked to any particular desktop/space, i.e., set the option "all spaces" for the window. This should make sure that the same Finder window pops up on any desktop/space.

If you open up as many Finder windows as I do on occasion, you would agree that it gets annoying clicking through the Finder windows to find the one you need. TotalFinder allows you to organize all your Finder windows by adding Tabs to Finder.

If you want to drag a tab out to create a new Finder window, simply mousedown on the tab, drag it out of Finder, and let go. You can also drag a tab back into Finder! If you want to reorganize your tabs, just drag it to the left or right.

Dual mode allows you to view two tabs side-by-side if you ever want to view them simultaneously. Simply press CMD+U or double click a tab and it will toggle dual mode with the tab to the right of it. The hotkey to toggle dual mode can be configured to something different.

TotalFinder is currently working on the ability to choose Safari-like tabs (for those who hate the Chrome-like tabs), cut & paste (another major feature missing in Finder), and making Finder communicate properly with Terminal.

I have a budget spreadsheet with tabs for every pay period. These tabs are created as needed and don't have names I can easily know in advance. For instance, one will be "10/15 - 10/28" because that's the pay period. Next month I create a new one with "10/29 - 11/11." I'd like to be able to sum a value across all sheets. For example, every sheet has a row named "Save," some sheets have a row named "Rent", but not every sheet will contain rows with those names and when they do they won't always be in the same cell number.

I've seen some examples where there's a bunch of SUMIFs and every sheet is manually named but I'd much rather not have to do that because this sheet gets copied fairly often and the sheet names will never be the same.
