Looking Into a J18

Hello all,

I have the opportunity to purchase a J18 that is relatively local. I have sailed and raced keelboats and dinghies extensively throughout my sailing career but have never been a part of a class association (I own and sail an older Tasar but haven't raced it). The boat seems to be in reasonable condition with decent enough sails. As far as I can tell it hasn't undergone any of the modifications I found listed on the site so no trapeze etc. Sail number appears to be 126, although I have no idea what the hull number would be. Ad lists it as a 98' but I do not know what the production timeline was for these so I cannot speak to the accuracy of that. 

The boat is within my price range and the J18 seems to fit the specifications that I was looking for so I plan to go and view it. I know that every model of boat has its specific quirks; the Tasars all have shattered mast base plugs and rotted thwarts, Ranger 22s have rotted companionway bulkheads, etc. Is there anything specific that I should be aware of with these outside of the usual stuff like corrosion, crazing, and the like?

I realized that one of the photos I was sent contains the serial number stamp for the boat. It appears to be one of the Johnson hulls built in 94' and, assuming standard HIN formatting should be #126 (matching the sails) although this doesn't seem to match the date of manufacture given the production run and number of boats produced. Then again, I might just be reading this wrong.

This boat was built fright after mine (125) in April 1994. It's hull #126.
