FIFA World Cup songs and anthems[1] are tunes and songs adopted officially by FIFA (or by official broadcasters and partners selected by FIFA), to be used prior to the World Cup event and to accompany the championships during the event.[2] They are also used in advertising campaigns for the World Cup. They are used as theme music in TV broadcast and also used in advertising campaigns for the World Cup. Some songs and anthems are more popular and famous than official songs and anthems.
The anthem was composed by Tony Britten, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, in the style of the famous 18th-century musician George Frederic Handel. It is performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and sung by the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields chorus, both of which are based in London.
The melody of the Wilhelmus originated during the siege of the French city of Chartres in 1568. The melody as sung today comes from the collection Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck (1626) by Adriaen Valerius. The Wilhelmus has 15 verses, the first letters of which together spell the name WILLEM VAN NASSOV (William of Nassau). In the eighteenth century it became the song of the Orangists (the supporters of the House of Orange), but was not yet the official anthem.
