By the time everyone recovers from finding all of the loot, you remember a few minor occurrences that follow Dragotha's demise...

With the final blow against Dragotha, the ancient dracolich roars in disbelief and rage. His body shudders, thrashes, and then clatters to the ground in a rain of ancient bones. When they strike the floor, they explode into clouds of crypt dust. The ominous shape of a ghostly dragon lingers for a moment in these clouds, but then fades  and is gone. Dragotha’s destruction brings a sudden burst of energy and light from those PCs harboring fragments of Balakarde’s soul. Once again, the ghost  materializes, but only for a moment. He fades as quickly as he appeared, he has not smile on his face, but the pain and suffering seen in his previous manifestation, and felt by those possessed by the fragments of Balakarde's spirit. As he fades, five spots of light remain behind, taking the form of shining, spinning coins which drift towards you. As each of you reaches to touch or grab the coins, they dissolve, filling you with warmth and tranquility (and giving you +2 to any stat you desire).

Later, as you being to sort through Dragotha's horde, a feeling of dread comes upon you and a dark portal opens. From its depths emerges a foul presence that several of you will recognize as an aspect of Vecna:

"You have fallen under the eternal gaze of my lord, Vecna - you have killed the lord's high priest and taken his hand. While bringing death does not sully you in his eye, you have interfered with his plan to find an eradicate the heresy of the Ebon Triad. You are fortunate that in unlocking the Library of Last Resort, you provided us with the last information we needed to finally destroy the triad, and your efforts to root out this infection has also been noticed. The destruction of Dragotha and his minions has eliminated one of the false high priests of the Ebon Trian" (you will figure this is Mahuudril) "but strengthens Lashonna, the true source of these vermin. She will not escape my Lord's vengeance, and YOU will be the instrument of his will. Lord Vecna will end the Ebon Triad, and forestall the Age of Worms, which your gods are content to await in silence.

The vampiric silver dragon Lashonna has served the Wormgod Kyuss faithfully for nearly 15 centuries, yet always in the shadow of his chosen herald, Dragotha. Lashonna’s lust to become Kyuss’ favored minion drove her to recruit powerful enemies, eventually you, to strike against the dracolich. While Dragotha was distracted first by your efforts to retrieve his phylactery and then by your direct challeng to him, Lashonna set the remainder of her plans into motion, seizing Kyuss' stone monolith and bringing it home to the Spire she built to be the key to his eternal prison. You have fulfilled one of the last remaining prophecies in reuniting the spirit of the mad wizard Balakarde, and now all that is left is for the fallen hero to deliver his city to the dead....

You and those who guide your actions may wish to defeat Kyuss' minions, to keep Kyuss eternally in his prison.  This, you must not do; no prison will stave off the Age of Worms for long. For you and all those you have ever known to live, a god must die...."

Swifty will ask Lucious (if there's time) to plane shift them both to the Air Elemental Plane to try to petition for the help of another Vaasti (or whatever they're called) undead hunter guy.

Does the aspect of Vecna stay around or depart after informing us that we have to kill a god?
One source of allies might be in the treasure we found:  that drinking horn is apparently priceless to the Frost Barbarians of the north.  Assuming we have some time, I'd like to look into researching and then contacting them.  If they were willing to take the uncovering of their sacred relic as a sign to act against the coming apocalypse, then maybe they can lend us some of their heroes.  One spell of teleportation circle and we've got ourselves a barbarian army!

The aspect of Vecna disappears abruptly after informing you of your charge. I assume that all is forgotten for a while as you go through the treasure, but after too long you'll receive a message from Tensor.  He is briefly excited at the fact that you have destroyed Dragotha, but he has also been trying to contact you for a couple of days. Apparently, you don't have a lot of time....

[Just arrived in Berkeley and checked in to my room, so I may or may not have time to provide details on what you learn tonight. Short version - Kyuss' prison has been relocated to the spire that was being built in Alhaster. The city is under siege by evil forces, and the fear and despair of its people is being used to strengthen and Kyuss until he is able to escape. Tensor urges you to return to mageport as quickly as possible so that you may prepare]

Just a reminder that there is NO game this week. We should be OK for next week (Jan 21st), and I'm open to trying to fit in a weekend game at some point to make up for holiday and travel breaks, if people are interested.

In the meantime, when you return to mageport, you learn the following things (long, but should allow for planning during the week):

While Dragotha was occupied trying to recover his phylactary and then trying to find those who destroyed it, Lashonna entered the Tabernacle of Worms and removed the stone monolith containing Kyuss' physical form. The monolith was placed upon the Spire which was being built in Alhaster (and which must have been completed by magical means, being far from complete when you visited less than two months ago). Kyuss' fortress prison is on display for all to see, creating fear and hopelessness throughout the city, and showing the confidence of his followers that nothing can stop Kyuss. Divinations have revealed that Kyuss will soon be released onto the material plane, beginning the Age of Worms.

His release requires the channeling of great energies; sorrow, despair, and death, taken from the residents of Alhaster and channeled into his prison by a massive negative energy vortex somewhere in the city.  Alhaster is under siege, with it's inhabitants trapped. Strange clots of green mist rise from the ground and undead monsters and immense worms stalk the streets. Now that the process has begun, Kyuss will eventually be freed; his prison cannot be restored, and Kyuss must be destroyed or re-imprisoned after his release.

Tensor has some good news as well. Kyuss will be at his weakest when he is released, and can be further weakened by interrupting the process being used to feed him.  First, by protecting the inhabitants of the city, you can reduce the energy being generated by death and fear. Second, you can try and interrupt the unlife vortex which concentrates and channels this energy to Kyuss. Finally, you will want to be sure that his most powerful minions, in particular Lashonna, are unable to aid him when he is released. If Kyuss is thus weakened and kept from his most powerful allies, your strength, along with the powerful artifacts you have collected, give you a chance against a newly freed Kyuss.

In addition, Auric and Glymm led a sucessful expedition to recover a Sphere of Annihilation, which they present to you when they return the talisman of the sphere they borrowed. Further, Zosiel's Circlet [i.e. Lucius' circlet of wisdom] was strengthened as the Vaashi warrior summoned to fight Dragotha faded. Auric's team can travel (with your or separately) to Alhaster to do what they can to slow Kyuss' rise. They will provide any intelligence they find, and you can send them to perform tasks as desired (as long as you have some way to contact them once there).  Tensor will not come along, as he has another task. He has been meeting with allies to try and be ready should Kyuss be freed. They were not convinced there was anything they could do if Kyuss and his undead army were to spread, feeding more and more power into the newly freed god. They instead will travel to the etherial plane and cast a spell to slow Kyuss' release and to keep his minions trapped in Alhaster (and keep futher minions from joining).  He believes that they can keep Kyuss and his followers trapped in the city for at least a couple of days, perhaps as much as a week, depending on now quickly Kyuss is freed.

Planning: Decide what you want to do and what you want team-B to do (any particular targets, any special preparations, any additional potential allies in the city or elsewhere). It's clear that your time is limited, so your shopping opportunities will be limited (and no time for crafting).  You have several artifacts; if you have special uses for them or want to give any to team B, that should be decided.  If you're all in Alhaster, it should be possible to meet up and exchange items/information, but may not be trivial to do so.

I'll be there on Thursday!
Planning:  I think it's pretty critical that we meet with the B team and discuss our strategy.  Interrupting the vortex and destroying Lashonna should be our #1 priorities.  I'm thinking that if we wipe out the vortex first, that will draw Lashonna to us.  B team could be in charge of protecting the city and keeping spirits up, since they're probably a little more conventional in their methods...
That sphere of annihilation might prove particularly useful in carving a path to whatever is making the vortex, but it might also be wiser to save it and use it during the battle with Kyuss in case things don't go our way.  Although, if we think the B team can handle the vortex, we could focus immediately on putting down Lashonna.  Regardless of what role they have, we'll almost certainly want to arm B team with whatever we can spare.

You won't find this out until you arrive, but I'll pass along the information now to save time (assuming you plan on doing *some* kind of scouting before splitting up and heading in).

It appears that the unlife vortex is located in or around Mistwall Manor, i.e. Lashonna's crib. This feeds a massive energy vortex located above the Spire, i.e. Kyuss' crib.

Sphere of Annihilation: the original happy fun ball. Control check is level+INT bonus, doubled if you have the talisman. Do not taunt happy fun ball. DC30 check to move your happy fun ball 10' (in a direction you *want* it to go). Happy fun ball may suddenly accelerate to dangerous speeds. Anyone can try and control happy fun ball.  Happy fun ball should not be touched, inhaled, or looked at.

Kyuss is only a level 1 deity (level 1, rank 1, whatever....), and none of his base stats are over 50, so nothing to worry about, I'm sure....

But Zulshan is something like level 26 equivalent at 16 INT (thanks for the reminder, Jen); that's a +58, so all she needs is a Fox's cunning or circlet of INT and it's all tied up.

Plus, she promised not to destroy anything that didn't deserve it AND she has the "good" subtype...

not to be confused with "good" alignment, which she does not have :)

I'd like to point out that the only remotely evil thing Andor has ever done is turning one old lady into a squirrel - and he turned her back.
Sure, he might catch an ally or two in a meteor swarm, but he's not firebombing cities and he's assuming you're all smart enough to have resistances up.  Just look at all the good things he's done:
- Saved multiple party members with his creepy healing cocoon
- Didn't disintegrate Glim
- Didn't put a teleportation trap at the exit to the extradimensional mansion that leads directly to that giant worm creature...
- Restored Adrien to non-chipmunk form
- Was fully acquitted due to lack of witnesses in that city fire in Greyhawk months ago
The list goes on and on...
What is the greater good?  To wallow in ignorance of evil, or to have evil impulses and willfully resist them?

Last time was a lot of divvying up artifacts, deploying resources, planning, buying, and then getting into the city.  Encounter with a nasty beastie interrupted the B&E into Lashonna's mansion. Game ended with the group at the entrance to the hidden underground (lair/dungeon/house of evil?) below the mansion and graveyard, which appears to the the place where the evil distillery (negative energy vortex) that is feeding terror and death into Kyuss' prison.

Ultra-short version: you came, you saw, you conquered

Found the underground evil lair, dusted some vampires, avoided some traps, and found the big central mega-chamber(s). Andor obliterated 8 liches without even rolling initiative, you found a bunch of creepy stuff, and were attached by 4 Avolakai ghostpriests (the creepy alien 8-armed weirdos, but this time as ghosts), who were using the negative energy vortex to boost their powers and to partially overwhelm your negative energy resistance. Eventually (many negative levels later), you had dispersed or trapped all of them, and Andor began to examine the massive machine creating/controlling the negative energy vortex.

Much to everyone's shock and amazement, he simply turned it off.  Didn't overload it, try to absorb its power, or any of the other dozen Andor-case scenarios that were going through your head.  You healed up and teleported back to one of the temples in town. You can rest up for the night, try and help the town in general, scout out the spire, or head straight for Kyuss while he's still (relatively) weak.  No report (yet) from B-team, as they haven't returned from their first excursion.

Last week: After leaving Lashonna's, you met up with team B and helped them out as they took on an undead army at the the deluxery, although they weren't doing half bad. The next day you went to check out the new spire and it's dozens upon dozens of cracked broodfiend eggs (ringing the upper levels). Fought some undead in the bottom, along with a vapire-dominated half-fiend daughter of the city's ruler.  You sent an Arcane eye up to scout out the 2nd level and found Lashonna along with 3 Blessed Angles.  It's fair to say that she knows you're there...

This week: no game - I'm in Miami

The following week:
By the way, the plan is to play on the 18th (the usual week-from-thursday) to deal with Leshonna, then the 20th (if Barry can get free) for the grand finale...

Quick reminder: no game tomorrow.  Not back from Miami until Friday.

Barry - how is the 20th looking for Lucius' glorious victory over evil?

Good question.  Does 1pm work for everyone?  That lets us finish at a decent time and, barring new plans, I was thinking we could do a quick dinner somewhere nearby.

Dinner is my treat, to either celebrate the continued existence of humanoidkind or, alternatively, to gloat and do a victory dance for evil.
