I haven't shared with most of you what has been going on in my life since June and why after much deliberation I've made the difficult decision to move back to the U.S.

Around the 3rd of June I was visiting a friend in San Diego. Late in the evening I began finding it very difficult to breath.  My friend, who just happened to be an RN, rushed me the best ER in SD.  After three days of tests I was told that I likely had Congestive Heart Failure.  I was shocked as my cholesterol counts had always been to the positive and I'd never had angina.  The doctors explained that the kind of heart condition that I had triggered a water buildup in the abdominal cavity, even filling the lungs, ego my breathing problem.  I quickly got an education on my type of heart condition.

The doctors recommended a Angiography, both to analyze the problem and to hopefully use balloons and stints to correct faults.  I had the Angiogram, but the report was it was impossible to repair two of the major veins.  It was time for Open Heart Surgery.  So that's how I spent my "summer vacation."

After the heart surgery (just two veins) there were some complications that kept me in hospital until the first of July.  I was then transferred to a "Skilled Nursing Facility", which is a fancy name for a Convalescent Hospital.  The reason for going to the SNF was to allow my Sternum to heal properly, Physical and Occupational Therapy and make sure I took the proper pills at the proper time.  Something went wrong within a week of my being at the SNF.  They never were able to figure out if it was a complication from the surgery, wrong medication or even that I was getting too much salt in my meals.  I ended up being ambulanced by the EMT's (God Bless'em) back to the hospital, where I spent another 10 days rehabilitating and getting my medications adjusted.  I'm just a pain in the butt, no?

After leaving the hospital the 2nd time I arranged to stay at my friends house through the end of August, then another month of rest and rehabilitation at a friend's in the Dallas area.  So ended 4 months of dealing with Congestive Heart Failure, surgery and rehabilitation.  What a trip!

After multiple episodes of almost dying and being saved by either well trained EMT's with the proper equipment or simply being 10 minutes from a Class A ER, I determined that it would not be advisable to put my life in the hands of the Jocotepec Municipal "Hospital."  Rather than give my impression of the local capabilities, I suggest you look into it for yourself.

Living here with my other disability, Post-Polio Syndrome (much like Fibromyalgia) was a snap.  Living here with Congestive Heart Failure is another thing entirely.

I will continue to monitor Jocotepecker's, so keep those announcements and questions coming in.

Mike I am so sorry you have to go, but it sounds like the best option.  Will you live in Texas?  Wishing you all the best.

Yes, I have 3 sons, 3 grandchildren, but only two ex-wives in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.  Thanks for the kind words Bev. Mike

Hi Mike, I am also sorry for your dilemma. I might have interest in your home. Since I am tired of Roca RV park. Is it available?

Mike, as you know , all of us up at the property at San Martin will miss you enormously. You have been a great neighbour for many years and we have shared your hospitality many times at your house in town too. You have always been there to help others and to lend a hand whenever possible. Best of luck buddy. Stay well and stay in touch…this is just another bend in the road to navigate...

Barb, Rick (and on behalf of Don and Francine etc)

P.S.  Regarding the house.

One of the major reasons I rented this place was its accessibility for someone with mobility impairment.  Not only is it great for someone in a wheelchair, it's also great for someone who walks with a cane/walker.  There are exactly "1" step(s) in the entire house, from the kitchen to the rear patio. There's a excellent U.S. quality ramp in the sala to the backyard.  Everywhere else is relatively level.

Hi Mike,

I don't think I ever had the pleasure to meet you, but I wanted to wish you much better health.  Take care,  Cynthia Ornelas

Dear Mike, I´m so sorry to hear of all you-ve have to go through since leaving Joco, but relieved to hear what wonderful care you received and that you are now on your way to recovery. Life is funny. Almost seems as though some angel convinced you to leave here, knowing better than you did that you needed to be up north.

I am writing from a hotel in Guad, the morning after attending the opening of Georg´´s exhibition at the new salon in the Governor´s palace. It is soooo gorgeous. I do not think his paintings have ever had a more elegant and gorgeous place to show. I am always fascinated by what the fine museographers can do. Pedro Ramirez who was in charge of selecting and hanging the show, said ¨¨you aren´t supposed to be aware of the museography if it is well done. But since I have lived with and know these paintings so well, I couldn´t help but be fascinated by the way Pedro had grouped the paintings. After breakfast I am going to go downtown to see the show of Dr. Atl, my favorite Mexican painter. It is a rare treat to see so many of his paintings in one place, and even though he is from jalisco origionally, usually he can only be seen in Mexico city. Georg´s show will be up for two months and the director of the museum told me they expect up to 10,000 visitors. Wow.

At least you won´t be missing our old folks posada this year. Due to new government programs, they have already received not only two blankets but a TV each! Just imagine that in the states. But Mari, who is finally up and around again after 10 months of recuperation, is investigating to make sure that any shut ins or those who were not ont he official lists also get their blankets. we have some left from last year and since this so called winter is already colder than usual, they will really be happy to receive them. Thinking of you and hoping you will stay in touch. Though gone, you are definitely not forgotten dear Mike, Phyllis
