Hi,
I have read many of the older posts on this forum and thought I would ask some of you who have been around awhile a few questions. Everyone seems more accommodating than those on the main expat forums.
1. We came into town one Thursday - I think it was in January - and there was a super tiangus. It started at the street near the bus station and spread over many blocks. We returned a few weeks later and the market was very much scaled down. Is there a schedule for when these "super tiangus" occur?
2. Are all the houses for sale available on the MLS, or are there others, for sale by owner, perhaps, that are harder to access online? We are interested in something a little further out and intrigued by Roca Azul, but only saw a few houses for sale in the development by the realtors in the area.
3. Any restaurant recommendations in Jocotepec?
Thanks,
Bonnie

Bonnie,
What you described as a super tiangi was during the main church festival in Joco. the regular tiangii takes place on Thursdays and the smaller Sunday tsiangi.
It is my understanding that all houses for sale are also on MLS. However you could drive through Roca Azul to see if there were any additional homes as you say, by owner. Down my street I saw a realtor putting up a sign for solocasas.com which is a site where you don;t have full Realtor services, so there may be other homes for sale or a drive through Roca Azul to see the For Sale signs.
I Ike China Inn.. Jesus worked at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco for years and returned home to Joco about 8 years ago. I also like Freida which is on Hidalgo. And of course the tamales across from Pharmacia Guadalajara in the morning, if you catch them before they are gone.

Welcome Bonnie, I hope you find a home here in the Joco area as so many other foreigners have.
1. The "tianguis" you ran into in January really isn't related to the weekly/twice weekly tianguis common to towns in Mexico. Once a year a major Saint day is celebrated and the one you ran into was El Señor del Monte. This will take you an article that ran in the Guadalajara Reporter, but if you'll Google "Jocotepec El Señor Del Monte" you'll get many English and Spanish links, Youtube Videos, etc.
As said, the major tianguis in Joco is on Thursday. If I'm not mistaken the tianguis' on the north side of the lake begins in Chapala on Monday, then Ajijic on Tuesday, San Juan Cosala on Wednesday and ending with Joco on Thursday. So it's possible to spend you entire week at street markets and never leave the north side of Lago Chapala. BTW, the bigger the town the bigger the Tianguis, Chapala's being the largest. Smaller towns, like El Chante, also have street markets, just not so elaborate.
2. If you're only interested in the Roca Azul area I believe all with be on MLS, through taking a drive through the neighborhood might turn up a For Sale/En Vende sign. Houses in Joco are not as likely to be listed and many for sale won't even have a sign out front. The community uses word of mouth to get homes sold, thus eliminating Realtor fees.
3. A few more restaurants; For seafood I love Rene's on the carretera, aka Miguel Arana, just west of the Hotel Pescador. Great food, great prices.
If every once in a while you want to put on some nicer duds and go to a place with table cloths, crystal, etc., you might try Quinto Sabor, Juarez Ote. 21. Juarez in a one way (east) street off of Hidalgo (main street Joco). I'd have to say this is the swankiest restaurant in Joco. This is where you go for a U.S. style streak.
In El Chante, our neighbor to the east, there is a popular "diner" called Gloria's. In my opinion the best hamburger in Joco and one of the best on Lago Chapala.
As for traditional food the list is endless. I live on the carretera, Miguel Arana 325, just east of the Bodega Aurrera (mini-Walmart) and within a 150 feet we have the finest take-out/home delivery one can ever need. Pollo Asado, Chamorro (leg of pork done in an open pit, my favorite), Costillas (ribs), and Chorizo. Two adults can pig-out at comida time for about $120p and have leftovers for an evening snack.

Thanks, Deb. This is very helpful information. This is month 8 living here. We had originally planned to stay for six months and then try someplace else, but have decided this is pretty close to perfect for us. We could barely drag ourselves NOB when it was time to return to renew our visas. So, now we are thinking about buying. Thanks again for the tips. Bonnie

I have to admit, we don't know a whole lot about the area west of San Juan Cosala. The first 6 months we were here we did not have a car, so were limited to riding a bus and there is not really that much information available on Jocotepec, though every time we visited we have really liked it.
We drove our truck from Texas this time so can branch out a little. Maybe we will check out El Chante as well. It is off the Carretera a ways, isn't it? I like the idea of Roca Azul because it is on the lake and has recreational facilities. which appeal to me. However, if we had a place with enough room we could always install a lap pool. The prices are also quite reasonable.
I appreciate the restaurant recommendations. We have not had very good luck finding out anything about where to eat or shop in Jocotepec.
Here is another question for you. I read that somewhere on the western end of the lake is an area known for making furniture. Have you heard of this?
Thanks for all your tips and information.
Bonnie

great furniture places in Tonala. Just outside of Guadalajara. We had our whole house of furniture from there.
There's also a restaurant we liked in San Juan Cosala', down towards the lake off the Carra Tera on Vincente Guerrera.
Sorry my spelliing is a little off. We have moved back to the States, but lived in Mexico for 9 years.
We
have many friends there and there's great restaurants with good food and prices if you are willing to try them.
love,
sally

hi, Can't resist a little commercial for my hotel, Los Dos Villas: Los Dos Mexico I'm on the hillside above El Chante. In case you need a place to stay while you're checking out the area. No one has mentioned Gloria's Cafe, have they? Or maybe you did Mike. Jocotepec in general is cheaper, the social life is more laid back but still warm and friendly.I've lived here almost 40 years and can't imagine anywhere I'd rather be. Just came back from celebrating Mother's Day at a near-by rest home. It was lovingly decorated for the occasion, we each had a hand made rose, best hamburgers and beans I've had in a along time, good conversations.

Hi Bonnie,
I just saw your inquiry about Roca Azul -- I've lived in Roca Azul for 6 years and really love it. I'm thinking of selling my house if you're still looking. Please contact me if you are interested or if you just want info about Roca Azul. cynto...@aol.com
