Hey Ultitude,
We hope you’re all taking it easy, and enjoying some good Ultimate this week! Take some time to go through this one, there is a lot of useful information for the coming month.
Monday night: Ultitude 1 took on Wits in the Mixed Summer league at the Walter Milton fields. Our girls and boys chocked up an impressive 15-5 win - chat to the team for an in-depth run down of how it happened! If you want to get involved in the league chat to Jedd or Mike.
Monday 26 Feb will see Ultitude 2 take on the powerhouse of Skyveld - should be a real cracker! Come out and watch/play some really competitive ultimate if you’re free.
Wednesday night: Cutting for a thrower: setting up your cut, pump-fakes, and deep cuts (18:30 for 19:00)
Saturday afternoon: Pickup at Pirates 15:30 for 16:00
Nationals training
The next training day is scheduled for Sunday, 11 March, from 08:30 to 12:30. We’ll be focussing on horizontal offence and a bit of zone defence. So if you want to learn how Ultitude is going to shred those cups and break those walls then come join us for bright morning training. We’ll be announcing the Nationals squad after this session, so please try be there!
For a quick update on what we covered at the last session: check this video out. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gIKvh4BiyLk We will be using a few of the drills that we practiced as warm-ups in the coming weeks, so don’t worry if you missed out - we’ll help you catch up!
Some key points to remember:
Cut hard, cut fast, cut decisively
Don’t cut past the bail-out line
Clear the cutting lane if you don’t get the disc
Use “snapshots” to stay aware of the field around you
Before you start your cut
When you’re cutting deep
When you’re turning to come under
Watch for a handler “pump-fake” - this means you should go in the other direction
We also had a little spirit huddle as a team to get our heads in the same space. Some goals for Ultitude in the coming season:
High spirit: Good energy within the team - supportive, uplifting, encouraging; Good energy towards our opponent -
Better overall level of fitness
Improved flow within the game (including earlier, more effective dumps)
PUNCTUALITY: at practice, at games and tournaments
More ladies in the club
In the interest of better spirit we’ll be trying to improve our knowledge and interpretation of the rules of Ultimate:
Rule for the week:
Interpretation of travel (section 18)
Travel infraction can be called by any defensive player on the field
If the travel is called because either the thrower didn’t slow down quickly enough/changed direction after catching the disc, or because his pivot foot moved: the thrower simply corrects his pivot to where the defensive player indicates and plays continues WITHOUT stoppage or a disc-check (Rule 18.2.6) (The stall count is paused until the travel is corrected)
If a travel is called and the thrower attempts a pass: if the disc is turned over the play stands (Rule 18.2.8)
If the thrower attempts a pass which is completed then the defence upgrades the call to a travel violation, resulting in a stoppage of play. The disc goes back to the thrower and play restarts with a check (Rule 18.2.7)
Stall count at maximum 6 if travel contested, and maximum 9 if uncontested (Rule 9.5)
If both offence and defence agree that the travel call itself affected play then the disc is returned to the thrower (Rule 16.3)
You’ve almost made it through - one last vital piece of info: we cannot function as a club and we can’t keep using the great fields at Pirates unless we pay our dues.
