There are still a few spaces open for Career Development and Management for Contemporary Photographers Seminar on 25 & 26 November. 

This seminar focuses on photography and gives photographers practical tools and insight to manage their practice. 

Learn to navigate the often complex process of developing and sustaining professional careers as contemporary photographers. 

While photography is one form of visual art that provides many opportunities to "make a living" through work as a photojournalist or commissioned photography services, photographers can find the transition to the museum, gallery and art circuit more challenging. 

The seminar is presented by Roger Ballen, Taryn Cohn & Toby Orford.

About the speakers: 

Drawing from his own extensive career, Ballen shares his experience on gallery representation, approaching and working with museums, marketing and networking. He also covers best practice within the industry such as editioning, sales and pricing. 

Lawyer and intellectual & copyright specialist Toby Orford addresses the critical issue of understanding, asserting and maintaining intellectual property rights(IPR). Topics covered include: 'What is copyright?'; 'When does it exist?'; 'Who owns it?' 'What function or purpose does it serve?' and 'What are the remedies for infringement?' 

He covers rights of reproduction, publication and adaptation and addresses issues such as appropriation, (lawful and unlawful), Moral Rights and Artist Resale Rights(ARR). 

Orford introduces contract law in terms its relevance to a photographer's day to day life. Typical examples such as buying material, leasing a studio, insuring works, exhibiting and selling works and work on consignment. Orford also covers laws that govern the taking of photographs and rights that photographers must respect in taking photographs of place and people, and the use of those images. 

With extensive experience in Management Consulting in the contemporary visual art sector, Taryn Cohn introduces and discusses mechanisms that build financial value in contemporary art and photography for the collectors' market.
