Youre into pumpin' house music, always struggeling with getting the right sidechaining to work in your track? It's never been easier: the Vengeance Sound Multiband Sidechain plugin offers smooth, high quality and irresistibly pumping sidechaining by a very few clicks. For your ultimate convenience and a clean sound spectrum, you can split your sound into 2 bands and use different setting on each of them, thereby e. g. keeping the bass area clean and adding creative dirt to the higher frequencies. Furthermore, 32 powerful presets by Manuel Schleis will offer you a professional basis - and the fact that audio signals, midi notes or host sync can work as the sidechain trigger makes it just too easy. You got to love this!

Important note: This product licence needs to be refreshed every 90 days and can be done within the Vengeance Sound V-Manager, or by using an offline key file that can be downloaded from your Vengeance Sound User Account.

Wrong, does not matter how you filter side chain, compressor will duck out full spectrum, that's it how it works ! For your problem, you need multiband compressor or something like a dynamic Eq with side chain ( for example Izotope etc.). For me best is Trackspacer from Wavesfactory. Also, you can try mid EQ from Logics on board EQ in MS mode for static removing problem frequencies.

Thank you so much for replying rzazula. A great trick you taught me. I should have been little bit more descriptive, I actually have one separate track for karaoke and second track for vocals. I want to make little bit more room for the vocals so they are a bit more upfront. I could do this manually by automation but wondering if multipressor will work. Thanks again

Cigame, Thank you so much for this trick. I have setup a compressor on Karaoke track and set the side chain (the one on very top right) to vocal channel. Selected 'Side Chain' from 'Side Chain/Output'. Filter is 'off' and Frequency set to 2K. Q is set to middle. I do see it pumping when vocals come on, compressing about 5 db. Am I doing it right? Thank you so much.

You are technically correct, but if you look at his use-case, he really just wanted to duck the music so the vocal stands out on top. I think the side chain on the standard compressor will do a good job.

If you think you need to revise basic concepts about compression before continuing reading you can check out this full masterclass on understanding compression, now back to the article

In fact, you will see this dry/wet knob in many other plugins, because parallel processing is a technique you can apply with any effect. Remember to set the dry/wet knob of the effects to 100 % when using them in a return track:

It is used a lot in electronic music in order to create the pumping style effect that works so well with 4/4 kick drums and legato such strings or sustain basses because of the rhythmic interplay between those elements:

Something that is usually misunderstood in sidechaining, is that when you are setting the parameters of the compressor, you are not doing it in relation to the main audio signal, but in relation to the sidechain signal:

A normal compressor applies the compression to the signal evenly along the whole frequency range of that signal. But with a multiband compressor, you can apply different compression amounts to different frequency bands.

If you want to see some great mixing content from one of the best producers in the industry, you need to check out this free chapter on mixing on Rupert Neve Designs 5088 from techno producer Matador

However, keep in mind that multiband compression is mostly used for mastering to do repairing jobs when the mix is wrong and you do not have access to the stems separately. Or to do some sound design effects otherwise impossible just with one band compressor. We are saying this so you realise it is not an indispensable tool when mixing and it is most times better to use a single band compressor that allows you to have total control over your sound.

2. Adjust the Input and Output levels if necessary. The Input knobs boost or attenuate the level of each band before it undergoes dynamics processing, while the Output knobs to the right of the display adjust the levels of the bands after processing.

One compressor is hard enough to get your head around. Strapping a stack of them together is almost cruel on us poor producers. How are you really supposed to use multiband compression, and what can it really do for your tracks?

The most common application of multiband compression in a production context is probably creating conformity in an uneven recording. This might be a bass instrument which loses bass in higher notes, or a vocal recording where the singer struggles with mic technique and drifts away from the mic occasionally.

By aggressively compressing the lower frequencies while still allowing higher frequencies dynamic range, we can achieve a consistently present low end, while mids and highs can continue their more expressive dynamism. Bass frequencies can be compressed more aggressively since we like to perceive them as a thick blanket of sound. The articulation in bass sounds comes from the low-mids, mids and higher frequencies.

With vocals, we can compress the mids more aggressively than the lows and highs, which may help to bring out the vocal itself, even when the vocal is quieter. By choosing to apply much less compression to bass and highs, we avoid squeezing muddy lows and noisy highs when the midrange compressor needs to work harder to bring out the vocal itself.

Mixed In Key Studio Edition tells me in seconds that the original track is in C Minor, and has a predominant notation profile of C, D and G. Other notes are present, but I can be confident that a bass drum that registers in either C, D or G will sound in tune.

By using softer ratio and threshold, we are making the compression effect a lot more subtle. It means the ducking will be almost transparent, but should help the vocal lift itself from the sub mix, which is always a good thing!.

To solve this, we can of course use a traditional compressor to tame the spike. But the degree to which we may need to squash the spike sweep might also crush the bass frequencies more than intended. A multiband compressor can save the day here.

Heres what I wanna do:

I have a Bus called Submix which I wanna apply multiband compression on but the Compressor is controlled by the singal of a vocal track inserted via sidechaining.

I already tried my luck with the Waves C6 sidechain plugin bit no matter where I put it (FX bin, ProChannel FX bin in Bus or Track), it doesnt show up in my available "sends".

I would like to see multiple sidechain inputs. For example, if I have a compressor and click on the "sidechain" button, I can only select one sidechain input for that compressor. I would like to be able to select more than one sidechain input. Some multiband plugins have an external sidechain input for each band, but because Studio One only has one sidechain input I can select, I have to use the same sidechain source for each band. If I had multiple side chains, I could pick one sidechain for one band and another sidechain source for an other. For example, if I have a multiband compressor with each band having its own external sidechain input, I can have one band respond to the kickdrum sidechain, another band responds to a vocal sidechain etc. I hope this makes sense.

I'm working on my album and VolumeShaper is on half the channels of every song, no joke. I use it for a variety of sidechain compression effects on mainly synths and drum loops, and it's easy to experiment with different rhythms of the compression.

SideChain ReAction Enveloper (SCRE) is more than just a witty play on words, it is the first Reason Rack Extension plugin fully dedicated and optimized for multiband ducking any incoming audio right out the box.

Support for more direct sidechaining of compressors is on our to-do list, but has not yet been scheduled for development. It is therefore unlikely to be released in time to be included in your project.

This is the way of thinking.

When SFX triggers sidechain to reduce the volume of music, it is played by 3EQ new return. When music is playing normally, it triggers sidechain to reduce the volume of new return.

Another innovative feature of BLEASS Multiband Compressor is its flexible sidechain system. This allows you to choose which bands will key from the input signal in the normal way, and which will key from a filtered and/or external signal. This is ideal for corrective work such as controlling resonances, sibilances and other unwanted artefacts, but is also a fabulous creative tool, allowing for stylish ducking effects and ultra-deep dynamics control.
