Alter language app

How could I translate the application into another language (pt_BR)? I noticed that there is a folder named "lang".

I created the file and the file pt-BR.yml and devise.pt-BR.yml.

Some things are translated, however, believe that some configuration must be done to enable the translation file inside the folder "lang".

How to translate correctly?

The translation code in jobsworth is a bit old and needs some work.

Liu, how much work do you think is needing to bring the translation part of jobsworth up to speed and hook in the whole UI? I am thinking we might want to move from the custom translation code to the official Rails i18n stuff. What do you think?

Yes, we have to extract all hard-coded strings into yml files. It needs some efforts to do it.

Liu, I don't know if you ever saw it, but the application actually had a custom translation thing in place already. I think it used the _ function call on a string from memory.

So we actually have the beginnings of quite a bit of translation.

Is there any automated tool which would extract the strings for us? I wonder if Redmine might? Then we could run them over Google Translate and get a rough first draft, ready for people to improve.

There is also (or maybe used to be) a folder which contained all the
translation strings and those would make their way into the DB.

can you make a simple En:En file, so any who know English can translate second part to native?

I am pleased to say that considerable progress has been made on improving the translation capabilities of jobsworth, thanks to some excellent contributions from the team at Digital Natives. Could I have a little show of hands on who might be able to contribute others languages? We have Hungarian covered. DarkPollo are you still up for Spanish? Liu, would you be interested in adding Chinese?

The only skills you need are:

* a running installation of jobsworth so that you understand the context of the various strings
* native speaking background in the language of your choice
* the ability to create an account on github and edit some text files

I must apologise... my only contribution here will be collating the work and doing some quick QA on it with google translate. I have a smattering of other languages but mostly enough for finding a hotel and eating nice food. And that's despite having a Greek father and Hungarian mother.

Despite the fact that Hindi is 4th most spoken language on Earth,
software are rarely translated to Hindi (or to any Indic language).
Here, it is an accepted fact that you must understand English to
interface with a Computer. (May not as much work for cultural
heritage, but works for the economy (or on a second thought, not so,
given so many people don't get access to PC because of language
barrier)).
And support is almost non-existent for typing in Indic languages. So
far if I ever had to type in Hindi, I literally copy-pasted from a
Unicode table or used Google's transliteration service (now called
Google Input Tools Online).
So let's just say that I'm up for the change and will be contributing
Hindi translations to the project.

Yes, Russian will be very helpful. We aren't quite ready yet since we have a few translation bugs we are working through and I need to set up a special test server for people to use during translation. However you can see the early progress here:

We will be reducing the number of translations needed since some of these translation strings aren't needed in our app and some have existing translations done for many languages (eg the Rails and Devise libraries).

We have been sidetracked recently resolving some other bugs in jobsworth 4.0, but we'll be back onto this shortly.
