NEA seeks a Director of Organizing. The Director, which is a new
position at NEA, will manage field-based and headquarter staff,
financial resources and programs, in order to recruit, retain, engage
and empower NEA members and create a culture of organizing within the
NEA and its affiliates. The Director must be able to move NEA’s
organizing objectives forward in a highly complex environment
constantly balancing the competing needs of various stakeholders. The
Director will report to the Senior Director for the Center for
Organizing and will oversee all of NEA’s organizing efforts.
Responsibilities:
• Develops and oversees NEA’s organizing campaigns by managing the
development, execution, evaluation and continuous improvement of
targeted, innovative organizing programs.
• Identifies and moves to scale successful organizing programs.
• Develops and implements cooperative partnerships with affiliates and
other key organizations to move shared organizing priorities.
• Assesses and co-designs innovative and effective learning
experiences for staff and leaders to become dynamic organizers focused
on empowering members.
• Acts strategically in rapidly changing internal and external
environments, advising staff and elected leaders on effective
membership and organizing strategies.
• Expands the intelligent use of technology to recruit, retain, and
engage staff, leaders, members and communities to advance the
organizing goals of the organization.
• Drives sophisticated use of data to enhance organizing decisions
related to members’ values and activism.
• Manages field-based staff carrying out organizing campaigns, often
under demanding timelines and with multiple stakeholders.
• Implements budgets that ensure strong stewardship of members’ dues,
concentrating on a return on investment for all programs.
• Manages effectively by shaping roles and assignments in ways that
leverage and develop people’s capabilities.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Relevant graduate degree and/or certification preferred.
• A minimum of seven years of NEA association or equivalent experience
required; with at least three years of executive level experience
preferred.
• Management experience within a union environment preferred.
• Proven skills as an organizer and in overseeing successful
organizing efforts.
• Proven experience successfully managing individuals, teams,
projects, budgets, and campaigns.
• Experience as an organizational advocate for education, labor and/or
social justice issues.
• Effective skills in supervision, decision-making, oral/written
communications, policy analysis, interpersonal relations, team
building, and collaboration.
• Established high standards of performance to ensure accountability
for work results.
• Experience working collaboratively across a complex organization to
ensure effective integration and alignment of resources and programs.
• Frequent travel required.
