SUMMARY
MoveOn is launching an entirely new in-house Video Lab that seizes the opportunity of Facebook-native video to help MoveOn members win priority campaigns, build support for progressive ideas and values, and grow the visibility and power of the MoveOn brand.
The Video Lab will be one of MoveOn’s major initiatives during the 2016 election cycle. Our aim is for these videos to have a significant impact on our electoral goals, including keeping Donald Trump out of the White House, helping great candidates win down-ballot races, and winning elections in a way that builds progressive power for the long haul. The Video Editor & Producer will edit quick-turnaround videos advancing these goals.
ABOUT THE MOVEON VIDEO LAB
The MoveOn Video Lab team will frequently and rapidly produce timely and compelling sharable videos that reach large and diverse audiences, with an emphasis on Facebook-native video that leverages the power of the more than 800,000 MoveOn members who follow our Facebook page and who are eager to share quality content.
The video team will lean into and build on the success of existing MoveOn video projects including our partnerships with Robert Reich and Heather McGhee and our O’Keefe Brief series—and will learn from and adapt the high-volume, relevant-to-the-news-cycle approach being pioneered by media outlets including AJ+, NowThis, BuzzFeed, Vox, and others: short, timely videos that use stock footage, photos, and graphics, and onscreen text, and usually do not require video shoots. You’ll place a premium on experimentation and innovation, working in 2-week to 4-week sprints to test and innovate different approaches, developing and building on existing templates that we know perform well on Facebook, and relying on the expertise of our analytics team to work alongside the video team to identify what’s working and what’s not.
Our goal will be to create compelling videos that share widely and help MoveOn accomplish our 2016 election goals and advance our priority campaigns, that spread progressive values and ideas, and that build a more powerful brand for MoveOn members. We will launch the Video Lab as a temporary project that runs through the election, but if we succeed in building a model that has substantial impact and identify sustainable funding opportunities, we will be eager to extend and continue building the project after the election.
ABOUT MOVEON
MoveOn.org is a community of millions of members working together to create progressive change in America. We take on campaigns to challenge entrenched power and push back against corporate and 1% influence in our nation’s politics, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice.
Recent campaigns have included successfully helping to defend the Syrian refugee program and the breakthrough diplomatic agreement with Iran; helping take the Confederate battle flag off of the South Carolina capitol grounds and the shelves of major retailers; defending Planned Parenthood; and working to build progressive power within the Democratic Party and our country via the presidential election, with our 2015 “Run Warren Run” campaign encouraging Elizabeth Warren to run for president and then MoveOn members’ endorsement and support of Bernie Sanders this winter and spring. We’ve also worked to combat climate change, defend civil liberties, push for racial justice and a more just economic system, and more.
With the heightened political energy of the election, 2016 promises to be a year of fierce fights and big opportunities. We will focus on fights including helping the eventual Democratic nominee win and keeping Donald Trump out of the White House, as well as on down-ballot races, advocacy campaigns, and positioning the progressive movement to make progress after the election.
