Job Description – Operations Manager

 

 

Summary

The Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ), a new project of the Tides Center, aims to replace prison waste with new safety priorities rooted in prevention and community health. To accomplish these goals, ASJ partners with state-based advocates to advance policy reforms that will significantly reduce incarceration rates and racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and engages in strategic communications at the national level.

 

In partner states, ASJ will provide support and technical assistance to organizations advancing justice reform through alliance building, issue education, and policy advocacy. ASJ is committed to both reforming state justice systems and empowering the communities most harmed by concentrated crime and over-incarceration. ASJ is the sister organization of Californians for Safety and Justice, a project of the Tides Center (www.safeandjust.org) and Vote Safe, a 501(c)4 project of The Advocacy Fund.   


The Operations Manager will be responsible for ensuring organizational effectiveness by administering the organization's financial and operational functions. The Operations Manager should be experienced in a fast-paced office environment and adept at adjusting and maintaining systems in a start-up environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage all operational and administrative systems and processes. 

  • In coordination with the Tides Center, manage all financial activities of the project, including monitoring cash flow and monthly and quarterly assessments and forecasts of organization's financial performance against budget, financial and operational goals. 

  • Work with the Director of Policy, Research, and Administration to adjust and update annual budget. 

  • Work with the Tides Center and oversee operations staff to process contracts, outbound grants, vendor invoices, credit card payments and employee reimbursements 

  • Oversee office management, including ensuring effective information technology systems.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help the Director of Policy, Research, and Administration with Board reports and grant reports, where needed. 

  • Other duties as needed to achieve the success of the campaign.

 

Education and/or Experience

  • At least 5 years experience in financial and operations management, preferably in a nonprofit or campaign environment. 
    Budget development and oversight experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent computer skills and proficient in excel, word, outlook, and access. 

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written. 

  • Knowledge of tax and other compliance implications of non-profit status. 

  • Extremely well-organized, strong attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills. 

  • Well-organized, a self-starter, flexible, creative, able to work under pressure, and be able to work quickly and cooperatively on several efforts at one time. 

  • Commitment to social justice and the mission of the project.

 

Organizational Relationships

Reporting to the Director of Policy, Research, and Administration, the Operations Manager will be part of a team of 8+ staff.

 

Physical Demands

Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Some travel required.

 

Work Environment

Office environment with open seating areas and individual offices. Standard work desks and furniture, florescent lighting. There is an elevator in the building.
