Whether you’re new to organizing or looking to hone your skills, CCAN’s organizing fellowships offer valuable experience to learn more and challenge yourself in the fight against the most urgent threat to Virginia.
For over a decade, CCAN has been working in Virginia, Maryland and DC to fight climate change by building a powerful climate movement that can stand up to polluters and push for clean energy solutions.
If we’re going to protect coastal Virginia from the worst climate impacts we need to build a climate movement across Virginia that matches the scale of the problem we’re facing. We need to show decision-makers that as the seas rise, so do we.
This summer, we’ll be building the kind of grassroots power it takes to convince Virginia’s leaders to act. In the 2015 General Assembly, CCAN introduced an historic piece of legislation - called the Virginia Coastal Protection Act - that would generate up to $200 million per year to invest in adaptation measures in coastal Virginia and clean energy solutions statewide, all while lowering emissions of the heat-trapping pollution causing our seas to rise. While we didn’t win in 2015, we built a strong base of support and we’ll be bringing this legislation back in 2016. This summer, we need to capitalize on the momentum we built and lay the groundwork that we need to win. With coastal Virginia already experiencing flooding due to sea level rise, there’s no time to waste as we work to implement climate solutions. Our Safe Coast Organizing Fellow will play an integral role in convincing Virginia’s leaders that it is time to tackle our climate crisis head on.
