The Director, Community – Central Plains holds strategic and operational responsibility for USGBC local engagement as well as developing and being ultimately responsible for major initiatives. He/She serves as chief fundraiser, by designing and implementing an annual fundraising strategy.
This position is highly focused on identifying and nurturing opportunities for expansion, while simultaneously supporting and growing relationships with existing partners, members, event sponsors, volunteers, and allied organizations. The Director also acts as the public face and primary spokesperson for USGBC in the local area.
This position is focused in USGBC’s Central Plains Community which comprises western Missouri, including the Kansas City metropolitan area, and all of the state of Kansas. Travel within this area is required.
This position is a part-time position at 20 hours per week.
Specific responsibilities include
- Collaborate with the Market Advisory Board, to facilitate the development, refinement, and implementation of a work plan that will further the organization’s mission and foster growth. Develop an annual implementation plan and budget, consistent with USGBC’s strategic plan.
- Keep current on market trends in order to identify and develop robust programs and business models that establish USGBC as a leading voice and innovator in our market, while attracting new members and supporters to the organization’s work.
- Work to execute USGBC priorities at the local level and be a champion for the local market’s goals and priorities in this context.
- Oversee design and delivery of programs and major initiatives; ensuring consistent quality of programming.
- Identify and develop program models that can be scaled regionally or nationally and lead expansion into new markets
- Measure and communicate the success, financial viability, and market impact of program efforts.
- Design and implement an effective annual fundraising strategy in order to generate traditional and innovative sources of revenue and further diversify the overall funding base of the organization.
- Build upon the strong individual and corporate partnerships that already exist, and be the primary focal point with donors, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
- Begin to build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with the funders, and business and community leaders for each expansion area.
- Represent the organization regionally and nationally at conferences, events, fundraisers, and in a variety of other settings.
- Regularly review and evaluate the organizational structure to ensure that volunteers have the direction and resources needed to accomplish USGBC’s mission and objectives.
- Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality.
- Oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of USGBC.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with staff, board members, volunteers, allied organizations and partners, and with a broad array of local stakeholders.
- Foster a positive organizational culture by actively engaging, energizing and recognizing staff, board members and volunteers.
Education, training and experience requirements/preferences
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s is preferred.
- LEED Green Associate designation, LEED AP w/ specialty preferred.
- 10+ years of proven not‐for‐profit management experience, preferably from a related community.
Other required skills/qualifications
- Ability to be creative and visionary, yet also be a pragmatic, hands-on business leader and manager who can build the organization’s resources and brand in order to achieve those larger ambitions.
- Experience fundraising via multiple channels (sponsorships, grants, membership, advocacy, program development, etc.) Established resources and connections helpful.
- Experience creating and implementing revenue generation strategies is highly desirable.
- Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
- Natural relationship builder with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and disciplines, including both corporate and community partners.
- Public policy advocacy experience.
- Excellent organizational manager with the ability to coach staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
