This Week in the GAINiverse: Navigating the Shutdown

Membership   Join Slack   News Feed Dear Friend, If you are one big jumble of emotions right now you’ve come to the right place. Hi, it’s me Natasha, and at any given moment I never know what my emotional state is going to be, but mostly I’m angry and scared. On the one hand I’m angry. Our government is shut down. I’m angry because Kamala Harris told us exactly what would happen if Donald Trump was elected. And she was 100% correct. On the other hand, I’m scared. Between the cost of groceries, rising costs due to tariffs, and the ever rising unemployment rate, too many people are barely surviving, meaning an extended shutdown is only going to place our most vulnerable people in even worse positions. But I know I cannot stay in this emotional state. And I know that what we value and do here at GAIN Power is part of the actual solution. Why do we do RootsCamp? We want to bring together the organizers who are in the trenches together to talk about what worked and strategize for the next cycle. Why do we do career fairs? We don’t believe in gatekeeping. We want everyone in the space to know which jobs are available so that we can power these vital campaigns and organizations. NOTE: if you’re a federal worker who’s being impacted by this shutdown and you’re looking for other opportunities, we have our October Virtual Career Fair in two weeks! Why do we do the Powerful IDEA Awards? We want to celebrate the talent in our space and provide hope for the future. And why are we launching our Advisory Committee and the working groups? We want to convene, connect, and care (for our people). Let’s figure out how to improve our systems, provide more trainings, and collaborate more. If I’m being completely honest right now, there is one other ray of hope I’m seeing right now, and it sits at the intersection of our work and what I’m seeing on social media. We are finally starting to see some members of Congress stand up and clearly state their demands. I’m sincerely hopeful that this energy continues and we see some changes in our elected representation after next year’s general election. I’d love to know how you’re feeling these days.
