Director of Development, AAUP Foundation, Washington, DC

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is pleased to announce a professional position as AAUP Foundation Director of Development to be filled as soon as possible. This is an exciting opportunity at a critically important time in the AAUP and in the academy; the Director of Development will play an essential role in building the AAUP Foundation, including participating in developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program and executing the Foundation’s fundraising strategy. The Director of Development will work under the direction of AAUP’s Executive Director. We invite you to join us in our vital work to defend and advance the academic freedom, shared governance, due process rights, and the economic security of the academic profession. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Direct the Foundation’s fundraising strategy, including specific plans for annual giving, cultivating major gifts, and seeking foundation grants. 
  • Develop and successfully implement the Foundation’s fundraising plan, including meeting associated fundraising benchmarks and goals.
  • Build and maintain profitable, long-term fundraising relationships with current and potential donors.
  • Provide staff support to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
  • Represent the AAUP Foundation at fundraising events and outreach to other higher education organizations, college and university bodies, and other unions and professional associations.
  • Coordinate with AAUP Foundation leaders and AAUP and AAUP-CBC leaders and staff on particular projects and long-range planning, including responsibility for planning content for regional and national Foundation events.
  • Prepare and submit grant and project proposals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license, and a willingness and ability to travel throughout the United States, as well as to work long, irregular hours and weekends as needed. 
Qualifications 
  • Experience and demonstrated skill developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan (experience with higher education or First Amendment groups or foundations, preferred).
  • Experience with soliciting major gifts and with preparing an annual giving appeal. 
  • Knowledge of higher education preferred. 
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work with professional groups and individuals. 
  • Superior written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency skills—including working familiarity with MS Office suite. 
  • Familiarity with donor management software. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred. 
Compensation 
Salary range: $90,000 for minimum qualifications; higher salary for preferred qualifications and experience. Generous benefits package as well as the potential to telecommute. 
 
Position Classification 
The Director of Development position is categorized as a senior program officer, special appointment. This is a management/confidential position and is not included in the AAUP staff union bargaining unit. This is an exempt position and not eligible for overtime pay.
