Texas Director of Civic Engagement
The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund
was established in 1981 to promote the participation of Latinos in our nation’s civic life. The
NALEO Educational Fund carries out this mission by developing and implementing programs
that promote the integration of Latinos into the American political system, providing assistance
and training to the nation’s Latino elected and appointed officials, and conducting research and
policy analysis on political access issues.
The NALEO Educational Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization governed by a 15-member
Board of Directors and a 28-member Board of Advisors.
The NALEO Educational Fund
maintains offices in Houston, Los Angeles, Orlando, New York and Washington, D.C. It
employs approximately 50 full-time staff and has an annual budget of approximately $9 million,
and offers a competitive benefits package that includes generous vacation, sick leave, medical,

The Texas Director of Civic Engagement reports to the National Director of Civic Engagement
and acts as the organization’s primary representative across the state and works collaboratively
with the Department’s leadership to develop and implement innovative programming and
strategies related to Latino civic participation both locally and nationally, including programs
specific to naturalization, non-partisan voter education and mobilization, and the Census.
The
ideal candidate will have a proven record in maintaining and strengthening excellent working
relationships with non-profit and private sector partners, community stakeholders, and local and
state elected officials and agencies; working effectively with several local and national diverse
coalitions and play a leadership and convener role; and serving as a key spokesperson for an
organization, maintaining contact with the media in coordination with the organization’s
Communications Department.
The Texas Director is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the Houston
Office, which includes managing two full-time staff members and additional part-time staff there,
as well as the Regional Program Manager’s Civic Engagement portfolio in San Antonio. The
Texas Director is also responsible for producing reports and proposals, helping to engage and
maintain appropriate funder relationships in coordination with senior leadership. This is a fulltime,
exempt position with a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The
position is based in Houston, Texas and requires some travel.
Qualifications
- Five or more years of professional experience with non-partisan community
organizing/engagement, political campaigns, and/or program management in a related field.
- Knowledge of city and state politics, experience working with elected officials and the Latino
community preferred.
- Self-motivated, with demonstrated ability to work effectively in both independent and
collaborative environments.
- Outstanding organizational and communications skills, including ability to interact with a
wide-range of audiences.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, organize and prioritize workload for oneself and others;
- Ability to effectively supervise staff and oversee office operations;
- Excellent analytical and writing skills (writing samples required); Bachelor’s degree or higher strongly preferred; Fluency in Spanish required (read, write, and speak);
Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment involving flexible hours, including
weekends and travel as needed;
Must be technology savvy and proficient in using Microsoft Office 365, Outlook, MSWord,
Excel, PowerPoint, and other office software programs;
Must have a valid driver’s license with proof of automobile insurance coverage;
Ability to work respectfully with people from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds;
