About Democrats for Education Reform


Democrats for Education Reform (DFER)  is a political action committee with 12  state offices whose mission is to encourage a more  productive dialogue within the Democratic Party about the need to fundamentally reform American public education.  DFER operates at all levels of government to educate elected officials and to support reform-minded candidates for public office.  In New York, DFER works at every level of government to cultivate and support Democrat           elected officials to champion quality school options for every public school student in New York.


Position Outline


DFER NY is searching for a Political Director who has extensive knowledge of local Democratic politics, campaign experience and the ability to recruit and train candidates for statewide office.  We are seeking someone who will work with the New York State Director as well as the national Political Department to run full strategy on electing more champions to statewide offices who champion quality schools and education reform policies across New York.


Key Responsibilities


• Research and monitor statewide elections and identify opportunities to elect new champions of education reform

• Recruit, interview and cultivate potential candidates for office

• Train candidates on successful campaigns; help build candidate platforms and campaign teams

• Coordinate with other organizations on recruitment, support and a coordinated get out the vote initiative


Candidate Profile


• Significant experience on political and/or issue advocacy campaigns, with experience seeing strategies through from conception to execution

• Knowledge of New York State political dynamic

• A working and up-to-date knowledge of campaign tactics including field organizing; earned, paid, and digital media; fundraising; voter engagement and community stakeholder engagement

• Knowledge of the State and City legislative and administrative policy-making process; familiarity with education policy issues at the district and state levels in New York; and  an exceptional ability to cultivate and develop relationships and networks, especially around education issues

• Ability to clearly communicate – in writing and in conversation – complex policy and legislative issues to audiences and constituents of diverse backgrounds, including potential candidates and external constituencies

• Experience coalition building and competency in racial justice and social equity work

• Ability to be mobile and travel across the state when required, approximately 20% travel
