Greetings:

I am writing as a Democratic campaign operative that has worked in Dem politics for nearly a decade. I am also writing as a Black man that struggled to initially make it into political work because of the social and economic challenges that many people like me face.

My aim here is to encourage you all, to the extent possible, to please start requiring people posting jobs to list a salary range. Not posting that or stating that "pay is commensurate with experience" or anything of the like is the opposite of progressive. If we are truly committed to making our work spaces, our party and our candidates more racially and ethnically diverse, requiring salary ranges in job postings is a small but very important step in doing that.

Many Black people and people of color juggle many responsibilities. We do not have the luxury of wasting time applying to a job only to find out it doesn't fit our financial needs. I believe this to be a small request that will truly help these job postings live up to what they say they believe, which is the actual practice of being progressive and not just saying that they are.

Thank you for taking this into consideration.

Thank you Frederick for the message and reminder. I hope you don't mind that I shared your recommendation to this whole group and that I am replying to you and the whole group as well.

I wanted to share so that the words were your and not mine but so that I could publicly say I hear you and want to follow your recommendation.  JTAL is hard to manage at times but we're implementing several other new policies and I'm quite happy to adopt this one. I appreciate the reminder. It may take us a few days to operationalize but we will work to announce it and enforce it. Consider this part of the effort. Thank you for speaking out and sharing your thoughts. Best, Amy

I absolutely second this. Organizations who don't post salary range rely on applicants not knowing their worth, so they can be underpaid. These applicants more often than not are women and people of color. I hope you take this seriously and start requiring posting of salary ranges.

In solidarity,

Supreet Kaur.

Agreed, and I challenge us all to rethink salary ranges and negotiations altogether. Any system that leads to worse outcomes for women and POC is worth re-evaluating, and there's enough data on implicit bias to prove that we're all susceptible to it.

Fully agreed, Frederick.

Waiting to decide on a salary range once you’ve interviewed a woman or POC just allows to consistently lowball minorities. This process should be transparent from the very beginning.

We rarely/almost never allow reply chains to this list but I thought this is an important discussion and especially wanted other employers to see. I'd like to see more of it.

Our new site - GAIN POWER is the perfect place for some of these dialogs. We're just getting started but can lead a hiring best practices groups or forums. We want to be leaders in this space and that often means taking our cues from our members and community. Thank you for the feedback on this and we'll work to be better. Thank you all for helping us get there.  - Amy

I completely agree with what has been shared above and won't re-state what has already been said. However, many employers have posted jobs today that lack a salary range or list, "commensurate with experience." How do we go about enforcing this group rule?

Adding two cents here in support. The hiring organization is in the best position to know its own budget -- don't make applicants guess. The only thing that happens when employers are not upfront about it is breeding distrust and resentment and creating divides between people doing the hiring and employees. Transparency is one of the things we need more of in the world to ensure working relationships are built on mutual respect instead of disappointment when people who've been underpaid realize that they have been taken advantage of.

Hi Amy!

Thank you for posting this and for pledging action on the related matter. I honestly did not expect much to come from it, but I am pleasantly delighted to know someone like yourself recognizes the need for it and is actively making change. Again, thank you so much.

Thank you to everyone that has affirmed my decision to share this. I also want to highlight that I made the recommendation speaking solely from my own personal experience. To that end, I do ask that you forgive my failure to explicitly mention women in the recommendation. Women are also disproportionately impacted by the omission of salary ranges, and requiring ranges to be included is a step in the right direction to address implicit bias against Black people, Latinx people, people of color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community and women as well.

I'm excited to see this impending change. I thank you all for your incredible work, and implore everyone to continue their commitment to this fight. I truly believe this is the most important election of our lifetime, and my spirit is soothed by knowing so many wonderful people are in this work.

In solidarity,

Fred
