About the Job:
Students need their student governments to serve as authentic, powerful voices that fight for their interests. A well-run student government helps drive student life, shape campus policies, and speak out for students’ needs both on and off campus. The Student Government Resource Center provides student government leaders with the training and resources to succeed in that mission, from running productive meetings to winning changes in campus policy. We give student governments the skills and know-how to accomplish their goals, develop stronger organizations, and be effective advocates.
Right now, we’re hiring an organizer to work on a campaign to make college textbooks more affordable. Over the last decade, textbook costs have skyrocketed at more than 3 times the rate of inflation, and have a highly disproportionate impact on student’s ability to enroll, stay enrolled, and be successful in college. That’s why we’re building a nation-wide network of student government leaders to advocate for change.
We need someone who is willing to work hard to advocate on behalf of students and help them advocate for themselves – whether it’s reaching out to student leaders from around the country, creating platforms and structures to support their advocacy, or working one-on-one to train those students as they develop plans to make change on their campuses.
Responsibilities
• Recruit student government leaders to join the campaign.
• Work closely with top students to develop their skills and advise them on campaign strategy.
• Create campaign guides and other materials for student activists.
• Collaborate with coalition partners in the open textbooks movement.
• Attend student government conferences to run workshops and expand our network.
• Visit key campuses to run activist trainings and campaign planning sessions.
• Use Facebook groups, email lists, webinars, and other tools to connect your campaign activists with each other.
• Keep your projects on track, hold students accountable to their campaign plans, and communicate regularly with the rest of the SGRC team.
• Assist in building the organization by participating in fundraising, staff recruitment, and marketing efforts.

Locations and start dates: This position is ideally based in DC, though other locations are possible. We accept applications on a rolling basis. Start date: ASAP
Salary & Benefits: The target annual compensation for this position is $25,500 in the first year. SGRC offers a competitive benefits package. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
That’s why the Student Government Resource Center is hiring a campaign organizer to launch a nationwide network of student governments to advocate for accessible and affordable textbooks and course materials. This position will deepen and expand our campaign to expand the use of innovative solutions on campus like open-licensed textbooks, which are free online and free to download.
The campaign organizer doesn’t sit behind a desk. We need someone who is willing to work hard to advocate on behalf of students and help them advocate for themselves – whether it’s reaching out to student leaders from around the country, creating platforms and structures to support their advocacy, or working one-on-one to train those students as they develop plans to make change on their campuses.
Our two-year program emphasizes hands-on training and leadership development, giving staff the opportunity to make a tangible impact on critical issues while gaining real-world skills that will prepare you to be a future leader within PIRG. Some primary responsibilities include:
• Recruit student government leaders to join the campaign.
