A newly forming non-profit organization dedicated to government accountability and transparency is seeking a communications director to oversee all aspects of our communications strategy.

 

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced communications professional to work collaboratively with a research and legal team creatively using the law to promote accountable government and uncover unethical and abusive government conduct.  The position is located in Washington, DC, and reports to the Executive Director and will work in close collaboration with senior staff.  The right person will have the chance to help build a team, create a brand identity and experiment with innovative approaches.

 

The ideal candidate will have proven experience with traditional and social media, as well as familiarity with legal advocacy.

 

Essential Responsibilities


·         Lead development and implementation of strategic communications in support of organization’s litigation, advocacy, public education and donor and supporter relations

·         Manage press relations by working with reporters and media outlets to shape, create and respond to news coverage; including cultivating relationships with producers, journalists, editorial boards, and bloggers

·         Prepare senior staff for media interviews by developing talking points, providing reporter background and suggesting responses to challenging questions

·         Manage design of organization website

·         Write and edit content for stakeholders, including press releases, newsletters, blog posts, tweets, and emails

·         Develop video content

·         Craft Op Eds for placement in major publications

·         Book senior staff on television and radio programs across the country

·         Oversee social media strategy

·         Manage communications staff

·         Ensure senior staff receive daily relevant press clips

·         Maintain press lists on key issues

·         Provide development team with materials

·         Be prepared to be on-the-record spokesperson

·         Provide leadership, feedback, guidance and day-to-day supervision of communications team

·         Participate in senior leadership team meetings and decision-making

·         Develop measurable communications goals and prepare reports on performance

·         Manage relationships with outside communications consultants

·         Maintain relationships with communications directors at allied groups

 

Qualifications

 

·         Bachelor’s degree

·         At least five years of relevant experience

·         Excellent written communications skills, including strong grammar and attention to detail

·         Experience developing and implementing effective strategic communications plans

·         Familiarity with congressional and executive branch ethics laws and regulations

·         Strong legal writing, research and verbal communications skills

·         An interest in government ethics and accountability

·         Experience reviewing the work of and managing others

·         Ability to work collaboratively

·         High degree of professional ethics and integrity

·         Outstanding communications skills

·         Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
