Communications Director – Job Description
NextGen Climate is a nonpartisan organization focused on bringing climate change to the forefront of American politics. In 2015-2016, NextGen Climate will be working to support candidates who have demonstrated a serious commitment to taking immediate policy action to address climate change issues.
In New Hampshire, NextGen Climate will run a substantial grassroots organizing and communications program to highlight 2016 Presidential hopefuls’ records as they relate to climate change and the environment. The New Hampshire campaign program will persuade and turn out targeted voters, with a focus on young voters, independent voters, and college students, while also working to educate the electorate and drive a public narrative about the implications of climate change.
The NextGen Climate New Hampshire campaign is seeking highly motivated candidates for the role of Communications Director to help run a comprehensive statewide communications leading up to the February 2016 Presidential Primary election, as well as the November 2016 General Election. The Communications Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an effective earned and paid media strategy. He or she will serve as the principal spokesperson and liaison with state and local press, while working closely with the national NextGen Climate communications team.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute robust earned-media plan to highlight the issue of climate change and the grassroots efforts of NextGen Climate NH in 2015-2016;
- Direct outreach to local and state news media, serving as the principle on-the-record spokesperson for the NH organization;
- Prepare regular reports on state/local media coverage of NH initiatives to NextGen Climate national communications team.
- Oversee all state-specific digital and social media content, in coordination with the NextGen Climate national communications and digital team; and,
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- On-the-record experience;
- Experience utilizing digital and social media in a campaign setting; and,
- The ideal candidate will have two (2) or more cycles of campaign communications/press experience.
Expectations:
Potential staff will be expected to work 50-80 hours per week through the Primary and General election.
Salary/Benefits:
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
