EDUCATION AND TRAINING DIRECTOR

San Jose, CA

Salary Range: $66,777.67 - $84,004.00/ Year

DEFINITION


The Education and Training Director develops and implements the union's education and training programs for worksite leaders and field staff and coordinates other special projects of the local union.

ABOUT THE TRAINING PROGRAM

  • A rank and file Education and Training Committee plans and oversees the local union's training program.
  • The basic steward training program consists of five basic workshops (Role of the Steward, Meeting with the Boss, Discipline, Investigations, and Communications). Two to four trainings are held each month.
  • An advanced leadership academy focuses on internal organizing campaigns.
  • The field staff and rank and file member trainers participate in running the trainings.
  • Staff trainings include a 6 week new staff internship program.

TYPICAL TASKS

  • Staffs Education & Training Committee of the local union.
  • Writes and tests training modules to develop the skills of rank and file leaders and staff.
  • Trains staff and member-trainers to present modules on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinates schedules for various workshops.
  • Works with staff to monitor recruitment and turnout for workshops.
  • Revises Steward Manual when necessary.
  • Identifies and coordinates outside training and educational materials for staff.
  • Produces educational pieces for localwide leadership newsletter.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of experience as a Field Representative/Worksite Organizer. Equivalent experience and/or training may be substituted for experience as a Field Representative/Worksite Organizer. Experience should include significant education/training component.
  • High level ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of training subject matter including organizing techniques, contract negotiations, meet and confer, grievance handling, private and public sector employment law.
  • Familiarity with variety of popular education techniques.
  • Ability to teach and mentor others to train.
  • Well-organized, with the ability to coordinate an entire training program involving many members and staff participating in several trainings each month.
  • Dedication to improving the lot of workers, and willingness to participate in a wide range of activities toward that objective.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including evenings and weekends.
